Statement
Retracted
ALGIERS. Algeria LTPD The
French army reported Wednes
day night its troops crossed the
lunisian border in pursuit of Al
gerian rebels. Then it took back
the statement.
Whether the French actually
did venture onto Tunisian soil
was left unclear.
If they did. the incident could
blow up into the biggest spat be
tween France and Tunisia since
French Air Force bombers killed
Moslems in a retaliation raid
on Sakiet-Sidi-Youssef 15 months
ago.
Both versions of the official
communique said six French and
32 rebels were killed in fighting
around Djebel Harraba. This is a
mountain which straddles the Al
genan-lunisian border about 60
miles south of the coast.
The first text said that during
the battle, French forces, "using
the right of pursuit . . . pene
trated one kilometer isix-tenths of
a mile) into Tunisia."
Shortly afterward an official
correction was issued deleting
mention of "right of pursuit" and
penetration of Tunisia. However,
there was no official denial that
the border had been crossed
As corrected, the communique
said simply that the rebels had
been pursued around the "north
ern slope of the mountain.
Since the northern slope lies on
both sides of the frontier, the ex
act location of the battle was left
vague.
n uorner crossing would pro-
vine prime propaganda ammuni
tion for the rebels. They charged
reccnuy mat unidentified French
military leaders were planning to
spread the Algerian war into Tu
nisia this month.
A crossing also would Hnal n
blow to President Charles de
Gaulle's efforts to bring the cost
ly Algerian war to an end.

Star Sings
NEW YORK APi "When I

Andy. Neither of us moved. I just
kept on singing louder and louder
to drown out the noise back
stage." Speaking was Dolores Gray,
blonde leading lady of the Broad
way musical "Destry Hides
Again."
Dolores, as a dance hall host
ess, was warbling to Andy Grif
fith, who plays the shy sheriff,
when a backdrop curtain caught
fire Wednesday at the matinee
performance. About 1,500 persons
packed the house.
Flames curled up the curtain
for about 20 feet. Smoke began
billowing about the Imperial
Theater.
Loud noises came frorrf back
stage as fire extinguishers were
rushed into action. A few persons
in front rows got up to leave.
Miss Gray, who had been softly
singing "Anyone Would Love
You. belted out an encore.
Practically all the theatergoers
remained in their seats.
Out front came Leonard Pat
rick, the stage manager. "Ther?
is a little lire, he said. "There
is no danger. We'll resume the
snow in a lew minutes if you 11
just go outside and wait for us."
The audience trooped out to the
lobby as though it was routine
intermission lit was onlv the end
of the first act.)
When they returned to their
seats, they patiently watched
mopping-up operations. Backstage
crews had the lire out before fire
men arrived.
