The bearded, 32-year-old Prime
Minister is making his (irst ad
dress in the United States since
he gained power in Cuba. A ques-tion-and-answer
period follows.
Questions were expected on the
executions of more than 500 mili
tary and police officials of Cuba's
ousted Batista government, the
suspension of some civil rights and
reports that Castro is exposed to
Communist influence inside and
outside his government.
Tribe Buries
Aged Chief
THE DALLES, Ore. (AP)-The
Wy-Am Indian Tribe buried its
aged chief, Tommy Thompson,
Thursday on a bluff overlooking
the Columbia River.
The cemetery was near what
once was Celilo Falls, valued Wy
Am fishing grounds before it was
Inundated by the pool behind The
Dalles Dam.
Thompson, who calculated he
was 10S, died Sunday. He had
fought to prevent construction of
the dam that destroyed the falls.
Some 400 persons watched as
the cedar casket was lowered in
to the grave, along with mocca
sins, a drum and a bell, tribal
members said was to ward off
evil spirits.
An hand-carved yellow wooden
bird, which Chief Tommy called
his message bird, was placed on
pole looking east from atop the
grave.

The society finally settled most

television broadcasters who com
plained ASNE was trying to re
strict coverage of the Castro ap
pearance. Officers of ASNE yield'
ed to protests that tha society
long an ardent, champion of
press freedom was in this case
"denying freedom of access to the

All networks are being allowed
to set up cameras and sound
equipment to record the Castro
appearance for later broadcast.
But it was understood that no di
rcct broadcast! of the speech were
planned.
Castro complained Thursday to
newsmen that the United States
press continued to print distortions
about mm including the reoort
that his appearance would be
picketed.
However, there were a few
young people at the airport with
anti-lastro banners when the Cu
ban leader arrived Wednesday
night. And Thursday a group with
such banners paraded outside the
hotel where the editors were
meeting.

But in his travels around the
city, Castro was greeted almost
everywhere with applause, cheers
and smiles, in the afternoon he
spent more than an hour chat
ling with high school students and
playing with children in a park
near the Cuban Embassy.
Castro s only official engage
ment Thursday was lunch with
Acting Secretary of State Chris
tian A. Herter. The appearance at
the ASNE meeting was his only
engagement for today.
Gas Company
Tells Dividend
PORTLAND fAP) Northwest
Natural Gas Co. Thursday de
clared quarterly dividends of IB
cents a share on common stock
and $1.43 per share on preferred
stock.
The firm's board of directors
also said net Income for the year
ending March 31 was 11,810.000,
up $386,000 over the year before.
Gas sales revenues for the same
period were $18,439,000, up $3,161,
000 over the year before.
Northwest Natural Gas, the
board said, has petitioned in Ore
gon and Washington for revised
tariffs tor increases in gas rates
that would bring added revenue

Talks With Nikita Likely
WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice
President Nixon will visit Moscow
n ate Juy. His expected talks
with high Soviet officials may
help to set the stage tor a sum
mit conference.
His designation by President Ei
senhower to make the trip also
could promote Nixon's chances for
the Republican presidential nom
ination next year.
A White House announcement
at Augusta. Ga., said Nixon will
make the trip to open an Ameri
can exhibition in Moscow July 25.
No other details were given but
diplomatic officials were sure he
would meet with Premier NiKita
Khrushchev.
The six-week exhibition is de
signed to show Soviet citizens
how Americans live, lhe Soviets
will stage a similar exhibition in
New York City.
Eisenhower said in a statement
that the purpose of the exhibition
is to develop broader understand
ing between the American and So
viet peoples "the kind of mutual
understanding upon which our
peaceful luture depends."

States desire for better relations
Nixon now plans to remain in
Moscow three or lour days. He
seems assured of red carpet
treatment. His time in the country
might be extended.
Presumably also he may visit
other capitals.
His trip is timed to fall between
the scheduled Big Four foreign
ministers meeting at Geneva and
a probable summit conierence in
late summer, perhaps in August.
He will have an opportunity to dis-
cuss pending questions in advance
of the summit gathering.
Nixon will be the first high-rank
ing U.S. official to visit the Soviet
Union in many years.

here that their research was an
attempt to confirm this impres
sion, long held by various scien
tists. Scientifically gout is associated
with increased amounts of uric
acid in the blood and with periodic
aching in one of the joints of the
body, often in the feet.
The research project described
today to the closing session of the
43rd annual meeting of the Fed
eration of American Societies for
Experimental Biology ran this
way:
The scientists measured the uric
acid concentrations of blood sam
pies which had been 'routinely
taken from a group of 817 succes
sive inductees at Ft. Dix, N.J.
Then they obtained the scores
achieved by the same men on
the Army Classification Battery
ACB a group of tests designed
to measure general intelligence as
well as special aptitudes of inter
est to the armed forces. '
The upshot:
"There was a "small but defi
nite correlation between the
scores achieved on the intelligence
lest and the concentration of uric
acid in the blood. That is, the high
er the uric acid, the more likely
it was that the individual had
achieved a higher-than-normal
score on the ACB.
The researchers said there were
two alternative conclusions that
could be drawn:
1. That Increased amounts of
uric acid in the blood tend to pro
mote intelligence; or
2. That successful people are
prone to eat a diet richer than
usual in certain chemicals that
are uric acid producers.
The latter alternative, of course,
would rule out intellectual func
tioning as regards gout.
But the scientists appeared to
w placing their bets on the first
alternative.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Is a
cucumber really cool? Qoes any
one actually get warm as toast?
Are a redhead s Hps as hot as
song and fable tell us?
To find the answers to sucn
questions a test-engineering team,
with a newsman s help, applied
scientific know-how to many a
familiar saying and analogy.
It was done with devices for
taking temperatures in all sorts of
places.
Put to serious purposes, the
tester is a boon to business and
industry. It was developed by
Leeds and Northrup Co., makers
of electrical goods.
Tests showed 'a cucumber was
anything but cool as the old saw
suggests. Inside it tested at 68.9
degrees, its skin 71.6.
Nobody could be as warm as
toast is at first 167 degrees.
Within a few minutes, the tem
perature drops to 78 or 79, but
veteran countermen say that isn't
what's meant by warm toast.

more people -are being introduced
to organ music played both with
the hands and feet, a New York
City organist here for a concert
said Thursday.
Virgil Fox, 41, appears tonight
at the First Baptist Church un
der the auspices of the American
Guild of Organists.
"Those stinky little electrics
have introduced more people to
music played by hands and tcet,
said Fox of electric organs, ap
parently showing a preference for
reed and pipe organs.
"It's like something wonderful
entering into the kitchen with dirt
on its feet, he added.
