Joke Proves To Be Unfunny
As Gals Rule Kansas Town
FULTON. Kan. (AP )-The men I
of Fulton thought the Ladies Citi
zens ticket was the funniest joke
in town until Tuesday.
That s when women won control
of the town government.
The voters turned out in record
numbers (total vote: 88) and elect
ed Mabel Austin. 72, mayor. Three
Ladies Citizens candidates were
elected to the S-member City

Hospital in Vancouver, Washing

Eagles Lodge who are sponsoring
the engagement say they received
a call from a Hollywood agent
who tipped them off that May
planned to stay overnight here
en route to a previously scheduled
visit to the campus of Oregon
State College at Corvallis.
By a bit of horse trading and
since the band was going to be in
town with nothing to do anyway,
the Eagles and May's agent,
Chuck Campbell, agreed on a per
formance at a walloping reduction
from the $1,700 that May is said
to be getting for his OSC concert.
Lodge members did some fast
calculating and quickly grabbed up
tile contract. Entire proceeds from
the dance will go into the Ore
gon Technical Institute student
loan fund. Dancing will be from
p.m. until 1 a.m.
The band plays in the classic
swinging style of the famous big
hands of the 30's and 40's. The
May style, however, is up-dated
and progressive, but not way
out. .
Between recording sessions, May
and his boys have drawn consis
tently huge crowds on their fre
quent tours of college campuses.
Frankie Lester, the vocalist who
accompanies the band, is popular
among music fans who like their
singing "straight," in the manner
of Frank Sinatra or Perry Como.
Tickets for the dance are on
sale at $1.50 per person at Her
man s Men s Store, 826 Main
Street, at Hal's Sport Shop, 532
Main Street, and at the Eagles
Lodge, 835 Walnut Avenue. They
will also be on sale at $2 per
person at the box office.
Eagles members say they may
invite more big bands to town if
the dance is successful.

Hoodlums Steal
