Decree No-Iron Summer
By GAY PAULEY
lPI Women's Editor
DALLAS, Tex. 'UPD-You can
Just about stow the iron for the
ummer.
Dallas fashion manufacturers
claim you won't need it for their
cottons or synthetics unless you
are so determinedly neat you want
to touch up collar or seams.
The manufacturers, previewing
their summer dresses, suits and
sportswear this week, bragged
about their "drip-drys" and "wash
n-wears" the way the rest of the
state boasts about its oil wells
or grapefruit.
One firm participating tn the
Dallas Fashion Center's shows for
visiting reporters put on the run
way a blue and white polka dot
cotton which had just come from
a spin dryer. It looked as smooth
as if the model had been slaving
over a hot ironing board for an
hour
The secret of the no-wrinkle
cottons lies In the finish the
National Cotton Council estimated
recently that each year some two
billion yards of the chemirally
treated fabric are produced.
The easv-eare fahrirs include a
variety of synthetics, or blends of
cotton with dacron, arnel. or or
Ion. One manufacturer showed a
hort formal in drip-dry white ny
Ion chiffon.
The dress firms haven't elim
inated the natural fabrics by any
meansmany silks and linens
were included in summer cnllec
tirms Presumably, these go to the
cleaner.
Designer Charles Dickey gave
a new use to natural denim, and
new use to an old "style "the
railroad engineer's jacket with its
deep blue color and white stitch
ing. He copied the jacket in both
denim and linen, topping a match
ing, belted sheath with bared
neckline.
"The original jacket I got for
$2." said the voung designer. "The
copy is a little more ... $70 with
dress included."
Dickey went against the general
trend of the industry here. He put
puffed, helow-elbow sleeves in
many daytime dresses. They came
with wide, starched cuffs, turned
down for a new look, or turned
hack the way a nurse's cap turns
off her face.
However, the sleeveless, the cap
sleeve, and above elbow length
dominated other lines.
Formals for the "deb" or girl
graduate featured skirts right
of "Gone With the Wind." Hoops
were an easy six feet in diameter,
giving them a dramatic sweep on
the dance floor, hut bound to pose
problems in getting into an es
cort's car.
Clifton Wilhite. the maker, said
the skirts had 40 to SO yards of
fabric in them.
