nancial Affairs Committee gave
unanimous appro al Tuesday to
Gov. Mark Hatfield's uninsured
motorist bill.
The hill would compel automo
bile insurance companies to in
sure their customers against per
tonal injury caused by uninsured
motorists or hit and run drivers.
The committee is controlled by
Democrats 5-4, but it approved
the Republican governors propo
sal over the recommendation by
Democratic ex-Gov. Robert D.
Holmes that every motorist be
required to have liability insur

mony that the uninsured motorist
clause now is being added to
about half the policies in force in
Oregon.
The insurance companies op
posed the hill. They do not want
to be compelled to add the clause
and would rather insert it on a
voluntary basis.
The companies testified that the

tablish a higher assessed valua
tion ratio on utilities for property
tax purposes.
Spokesmen lor the utilities call

But Senate President Walter
Pearson ' D-Portland told the
Senate Taxation Committee the
measure would stall the shift of
property taxes from utilities to
residences.
The bill would establish an as

on utilities than on business prop

homes than on business.
Pearson said the share of the
total property tax in this state
paid by home owners has been
increasing in recent years while
the share paid by utilities has!
