To Decide Career

NEW YORK (UPH-Pride is the
answer today as to how much
longer 40-year-old Ted Williams
will play baseball.
The American League batL'ng
champion doesn't know himself
how much longer he will continue
to wear the flannels of the Boston
Red Sox. It depends primarily on
how long he continues to hit like
a champion.
When he doesn't, he'U step down.
Ted's current aim is to increase
his standing among the all-time
home run hitters. Momentarily he
is in fifth place and his aim this
year is to move past fourth place
Lou Gehrig and close in, and
pass, if possible, third place Mel
Ott.

Babe Ruth leads them all with
714 homers and this, due to al
most five seasons lost because of
military service in World War II
and the Kureau conflict, is beyond
Williams' reach. But Williams,
with a couple of good years, could
wind up m second place.
Jimmy Foxx is the runnerup
with 534. a mere 52 belts ahead
of the splendid splinter. Two more
seasons might do it for Williams.
Ott, in third place with 511. is
only 29 ahead of Ted and Wil
liams, with 482 starting the sea
son, seems a quick cinch to ga-

Ty Cobb, who played until he
was 43. sees no reason why Wil
liams can't go on.
"As long as he keeps his legs
in shape, he can do it." Cobbi
