Many Aides In Congress
Make More Than Bosses
WASHINGTON (AP) - Manyl
congressional hired hands are far
ing better financially than are
their bosses.
It is estimated that 248 of them
ars being paid more than $16,000
each per year, while more than
500 others are eligible for upwards
of $10,000 each.
That's considerably less than
the $22,500 annual salary paid sen
ators and representatives, but the
difference is more imaginary than
real.
Out of his annual salary, a sen
ator or representative usually
must finance two homes, one here
and one in his home state, and
must foot the bill for campaign
costs', contribute to all sorts of
charities, and entertain visiting
constituents.
The average employe has no
such expense, although some of
them kick in modest sums to
the boss' campaign funds. It's con
sidered good job insurance.
"I wouldn't swap jobs with the
boss," said one veteran employe
who didn't want to be identified.
"He's suggested the swap, and
I'm not sure he was joking, either.
My take-home pay is better than
his, and I don't have his worries."
Best-paying congressional jobs
are those of Senate and House of
ficials who are not members.
Their pay ranges as high as $20.-
000 plus, in some cases, the use of
a limousine and a chauffeur.
Each of the 98 senators is al
lowed to hire an administrative
assistant at a salary of about
$16,300 annually. It's assumed that
every senator has one, although
the Senate long has refused to
make public its payrolls.
The top salary any of the 436
House members may pay an em
ploye is about $13,300. Not all of
them pay the maximum, although
many of them do.
Among the more attractive jobs
are those on committee' staffs.
They not only pay well but are
more stable. Staff experts seldom
lose out when there is a political
upheaval. Employes of individual
senators and representatives
normally lose out when the boss
quits or is defeated, although
many switch . easily from one
member to another.
There are at least 84 jobs on
Senate committees which pay
more than $16,000 annually. There
are at least 66 such jobs on House
committees.
Current records list the Senate
Judiciary Committee as the best
place to land a top-salary job
There are 15 employes getting
more than $16,000 each.
Running a close second is .the
Senate Appropriations Committee
