Fashion Editors, Up In The Air,
See Latest Fashions In Wool
By DOROTHY ROE
Associated Press Women's Editor. she is

seat bells, please, and observe
the no-smoking signs. We're off
on a modern fashion show, aboard
a jet plane 30,000 feet up.
The passengers two planeloads
of them are 200 members of the
national fashion press, in New
York this week for the spring
howings of New York designers.
They've already covered eight
fashion shows during the day.
Now they're embarking to see an
other, this time all wool and all
up in the air.
The fashions are superb, the
models tired but beautiful. But
let's take a look at the passengers.
There's Betty Milburn. women's
editor of the Tucson Daily Citizen,
who would rather fly her own
plane than eat, or even dance.
She and her husband, who works
on the same paper, want a plane
they can park in their back yard.
Then there's Ivy Coffee, wom
en's editor of the Oklahoman and
Times, Oklahoma City, a tall.
breezy blonde who thinks there's
no business like newspaper busi
ness, and who runs a staff of
nine, turning out a women's sec-
tion of three to four pages daily.
making over the women s pages
lor each of the paper s five edi
tions.
Today's newswomcn take to the
air in more ways than one. For
instance, there s Mildred Alexan
der, news director of TV and ra
dio station WTAR in Norfolk, Va.(
and former president of the Vir
ginia Assn. of Associated Press
Broadcasters. Her medium is the
air instead of the printed page, but

Edrie Van Dore ,is assistant
managing editor and women's ed
itor of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
She heads a staff of eight women
and one man, works about 18
hours a day, travels to Europe,
South America or the West Coast
as casually as most people take
a Sunday drive; and enjoys every
minute of It.
Mcta Blackwll, Sunday editor
of the San Bernardino, (Calif.)
Sun-Telegram, has held practical
ly every ion on the paper, includ
ing those of city editor and wom
en's editor. Now the paper has a
man editing the women s pages,
but Mcta continues to cover fash

Betty Peach does fashions and
features for the San Diego Eve
ning Tribune, and also gets around.
She was in New Guinea with the
Red Cross during World War II,
refers to her husband simply as
"Peach," has a home, a yard and
a garden in San Diego and thinks
life is simply peachy.
Those are a few of the modern
feminine press. They've changed
a lot since the days of Nellie Bly.

fits the figure.
The relaxed look is on iis way
out," said designer Harry Frech-
tel. "This spring marks the begin
ning of the return to the fitted
suit."
Several -other designers also are
returning each collection shown
to visiting fashion editors this
week included at least a couple of
suits with slim skirt and jacket
hugging the waistline and upper
hipbone. The shows are held
semi-annually by the couture
group of the New York Dress In
stitute.
However, there is no return to
Ihe broad, padded shoulders that
went with fitted suits of the 1930 s
and early '40 s. Rounded, soft
shoulders are the rule.
Frechtel suits have perfectly
smooth shoulders: he cuts sleeve
and bodice of the jacket all in one
piece.
Sleeves of suits in most collec
tions are "bracelet length," bar
ing wrists for those women who
like bangles. But Monte-Sano and
Pruzan provides the breeziest
sleeve of all: the firm bares arms
in both coats and suits to above
the elbow.
Most of the new suits are single-breasted,
but Ben Zuckerman
showed some double-b r e a s t e ri
jackets closed with enormous but
tons in black or a smoky pearl
shade.
Fitted jackets are ol two main
types one reaching three to
four inches below the waist; the
oiher stopping right at the waist.
Some of the "relaxed" or looser
fitting jackets do hug the figure
in one spot the hipbone. But
leave the waistline undefined.
In the "relaxed" category, the
number one jacket is Ihe cardi
gan type, usually collarless and
worn casually unbuttoned. Davi-
dow shows a group in small Scot
tish checks worn with small,
fringed stole around the neck.
skirts are cut pencil-slim in
most collections, but a few design
ers toss in a few suits with pleat
ed skirts Ben Reig is one.
Frechtel eases skirt fit with
scattered gathers across the
tummy.
Watch also (or bold colors to
brighten the suit picture. Along
with standard gray and navy,
there are flamingo and watermel
on pink, lemon yellow and deep
lilac.

MIXES COSTLY
How many women are left who
cook from the very beginning?
Those who do might take heart
from economists' findings. Pie
filling mixes, for example, save
anoui 9 minuies in preparation
time but cost about 75 per cent
more than the individual ingredients.

SIMPLICITY IS CHIC
The clue to looking well-dressed
lied in one word: simplicity. If
vou like color, wear it. But wear
it subtly. Don't mix colon unless
you've a real flair. Wear black
if you like but highlight it with
accessories that have a gleam.
