Check Cash
Problem Told
GLENDALE, Calif. (API-Actor
Chester Morris may find it more
trouble than it s worth to cash a
28-year-old paycheck for SfifiO that
turned up in a Glcndale house.
The new owner of the house
found the check Tuesday in
dek. H was made out by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
studio in 1930 and
had not been endorsed.
Morris, who is acting In San
Francisco, said he intended to try
to cash it.
"I don't remember." he said
"hut I might have worked awfully
hard for that money."
lie said he never saw his pay
checks, which went to his business
manager. He had never heard of
the previous owner of the house,
Airs. Hollie. C. Smith.
The hank on which the check
Is drawn said it doesn't cash
checks more than six months old
and the only way Morris could
collect on it was to get MGM to
write a new one.
MGM cashier James Hcagy
said it would take a lot .of re
search lo determine whether the
studio owes Morris anything. He
taid it was possible a duplicate
check was issued.
Glendale police said they would
give the check to Morris if he
wants it.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP
Movie producer Samuel Goldwyn
says tne motion picture industry
is at a record low because of the

"How long do you think this will
continue when actors demand

gross or the profits in addition?"
he asked Tuesday night at a
Screen Producers' Guild Banquet,
where he received the Guild's
Milestone award.
"There are some people in
Hollywood who can write, direct

"imperative" for Virginia to have
one "statewide basis" for fighting

Monday's court rulings wiped

There are no state laws to pre

the schools, shut in September to
prevent race mixing.
Still, there is no indication of a
move to reopen schools in any of
the three localities.

Howard Bailey, instructor at KU,
presented the concrete salary pro
posals 01 the teachers committee.
In summary, these called for:
Increases in base pay by train
ing rank: three year, raised to
W.100 from $.1,900; Bachelors.
M.SOO from W.200: five-year. M.7P0
from $4,470; Masters, $4,800 from
$4,600.
Increasing the annual Increment
for persons with one, two or three
years of experience from $100 to
$200.
As a, consequence of the conibi
nation of these two recommenda
lions, persons with three years of
experience would receive the fol
lowing salaries, by training rank
(with the salaries they would re
ceive under the present scale in
dicated in parentheses': three-
year, $4,700 i $4,1001; Bachelors,
$5,100 ($4.5001; five-year, $5,300
$4,770); and Masters, $5,400 ($4,
900).
After the three-year experience
level, salaries would rise each
year at the same rate as at pres
ent, that is, $200 per year for
persons with four and five years
of experience, and $100 for each
year of experience thereafter.
Every teacher in the system
would receive the benefits of these
modifications; the only ones with
over three years' experience who
would not receive the entire $500
to $00 increase which teachers
on that level would receive would
be the senior teachers. This is ex
plained by the fact that the cut
off points on salary increases for
years of experience would be
set lower.
Only eight, rather than 10, years
of experience would be credited
in the three-year training rank col
umn, in which the maximum
would pass from $5,000 after 10
years to $5,400 after eight. Maxi
mums in the other training ranks
would be: Bachelors, $6,000 after
10 years rather than $5,700 after
13: five-year, $6,400 after 12 years
rather than $6,070 after 13; and
Masters, $6,700 after 14 years rath
er than $6,300 after 15.
According to Bailey, the suggest
ed salary scale would cost the
elementary school district $792,992,
an increase of $58,750 over the
present schedule, and the high
school district, $43X.317, an in
crease of $31,382. These figures
cover both teachers and supervis
ory personnel in the individual
schools, and are based on carry
ing forward the present staff for
one year, which would result m
some increments in any case. Bai
ley estimated that increases would
vary from $200 to $600 with an
average of $440.
At the end of Bailey's presenta
tion, Groshong reiterated the com
mittee's contention that its pri
mary objective has been to pre
sent Klamath Falls with a salary
schedule allowing it to compete
with other districts in Oregon.
"This schedule would allow us
to expect more people with two
years or less experience," he
said. "This is economical for the
district, which otherwise brings in
too many people close to the top."
Groshong presented a letter to
J. C. Renie, chairman of the joint
committees, asking for a later,
closed meeting of the teachers'
spokesmen with budget committee
men. Renie told them the dale
of this meeting might be set next
week.

NOT "STRIPPIO", BUT IQUIPPED AS YOU WANT IT
Sometimes you run into price comparisons
where the higher-priced car has no extra equip

what we mean here. We mean only $200 more
for a car fitted out the way you want it.
Tou could pick the LeSabre 4-door sedan
pictured here . . . including Twin-Turbine
automatic transmission, radio, heater, white

glove compartment lights. Even with all that
our statement will stand up.
FURTHERMORE, YOU11 OWN A SUtCK
You'll have a fine car, with a fine-ear ride,

judged the "outstanding" cars in their field
in a recent poll of ear owners.

The engineers planned to build noticeably
better gas mileage into the '59 Buicks. Reports
now in from owners, and careful competitive

Alongside all this, put the good trade-in value
which the Buick name and Buick's successful
