Given Post
Gov. Mark Hatfield today ap
proved the appointment of Hugh
Taylor. 62. veteran State Depart
ment of Agriculture employe, as
chief of the division of plant in
dustry, on the recommendation of
Director Frank Mchennon, whom
he succeeds.
In addition to his long tenure
with the Department of Agricul
ture, which began for Taylor on
July 7, 1934, he has had consider
able personal experience in dairy
larm and crop management.
A Salem resident since 1941
when he became assistant chief
of the division, Taylor had previ
ously served as supervisor of ship
ping point inspection at Ontario.
Before entering state work, he
owned and operated, together with
a brother, one of the largest (135
cows) retail dairies in the state.
He later owned and managed a
64-acre orchard tract ft Weiser,
Idaho, which produced an average
BO cars of apples yearly.
Taylor is an executive board
member of the Association of
American Seed Control officials
snd a Western representative of
the organization. He is also a mem
ber of the Western heed Control
Officials.
Son of a pioneer Oregon farmer
and public servant, Walter K. Tay
lor, who was mayor of Corvallis
for several terms, he attended
Oregon State College and served
with the Navy. His mother, 84, is
active in Corvallis civic and church
circles.
He is a member of the Presby
terian Church, Salem; Men's Gar
den Club, Salem; the Masonic
Lodge, and the American Legion
His son, Ralph Taylor, is a Salem
attorney.

the top leaders In agriculture and
this appointment otters an excel
lent challenge in which I hope to
be a credit to my predecessor
and continue with his policies,
Taylor said.
Springfield
To Host Meet
The second annual Oregon State
Coin Jamboree will be held in
Springfield on Saturday and Sun
day, January 24 and January 25.
The Willamalane Coin Club of
Springfield will host the jamboree
at the Park and Recreation Dis
trict's Memorial Building at Eighth
and North A streets, and there
will be ample free parking space
at this location.
There will be 15 bourse tables
nith Healm-s from several states.
The auction on Saturday will be at
2 p.m. Sunday's auction, also at 2
o'clock will feature choice materi
als. Coin collectors are invited to
come and exhibit their coins and
currency, and should bring their
own cases for exhibit. Ribbons will
be awarded each classification.
Registration fee is 50 cents, op
tional, and coffee will be served
both days free to those who regis
ter. There will be no admission
charge. Visitors are invited.
Wnnrien nickels will be sold as
souvenirs, one commemorating the
Oregon State Centennial and the
other the Coin Club Jamboree. The
nickels will sell at 15 cents each
m turn fnr 95 rents.
