Three of Orogon'i lop-ranked
prep ba.skothali teams will see ac
tion on Pelican Court this week
end when the KUHS Pelicans play
host first to the Medford Black
Tornado in a return match on
Friday nicht then face the Bend
Lava Bears, m the first mcetinc
of the two schools in a number
of seasons, on Saturday evening.
The Medford - Klamath Falls
match is a conference test, and
an important one. The Bend con
test will have no bearing on the
SOC standings but will be eyed
closely by A-l schools throughout
the slate as perhaps a hint of
the possibilities come state tour
nament time next March.
Reserved seat tickets to both
games are on sale at the cham

The Pelicans moved into the
top spot on the Southern Oregon
Conference ladder by virtue of
their decisive 62-46 victory over
the Grants Pass Cavemen on the
Orants Pass court last Saturday.
I he victory nullified what had
appeared to be a jinx of sorts
held by the Cavers. Grants Pass
met the Pels in Klamath Falls
in the league opener and dealt
the KU club a 62-51 whipping and
was also the only team to beat
the 1 !t 58 champions last season.
' Coach Dean White's KU squad
also holds a one game edge over
Medford off a 70-61 beating ad
ministered at Medford in the sec
ond conference start of the sea
son. The Medfordiles, in their last
outing, pushed the Grants Pass
ers down into the No. 3 position
by thumping them 57-41 last Fri
day, on the Cavemen s home floor.
According to the dope sheets the
Tornado-Pelican clash should give
a fairly true indication of which
teams should earn state tourney
berths come the end of the season.
Bend, undefeated in 11 games
this season, established an all time
state A-l scoring record when they
blasted the Central Point Crater
Comets 99-50 last Friday. In a
general comparison, the Pelicans
defeated the Comets by a count
of 62-40.

When Basketball Play Resumes
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Kentucky, North Carolina and
Kansas State, beware!
The record shows that top
ranked college basketball teams
times slump when facing their
first stiff tests following the mid
year examinations.
A year ago at the midterm
hiatus. West Virginia had a 130
record and was the nation's No. 1
team. The Mountaineers won their
first game following the break.
But their unbeaten skein went by
the boards in the next one hi a
72-68 upset loss to Duke.
Kansas, No. 2 a year ago, had
won 12 games and lost two. But
the Jayhawks dropped a 79-75
verdict to Kansas State and were
beaten twice more to finish with
a season mark of 18-5.
Kansas State, which was ranked
third, the same position they hold
in the latest Associated Press rat
ings, was 12-1. State suffered four
setbacks in the second half of the
campaign and wound up with 22-5.
The current top three teams are
idle until next week. Kentucky and
Kansas State swing back into
action Monday and North Caro
lina on Friday. Kentucky faces
Georgia Tech, Kansas State meets
Iowa State and North Carolina
plays Clemson.
The only major game on to
night's schedule pits unbeaten
Auburn 1 11-0) against Georgia.
Auburn is the No. 5 team.
In last night's games, VMI won
its first Southern Conference game
in seven starts by edging Virginia
Tech 81-78, Bowling Green handed
Kent State its first Mid American
Conference loss 68-59 and Murray.
Ky. whipped East Tennessee 73-62
in the Ohio Valley Conference.
VMI made good on 30 of 50 field
goal attempts. The K e y d e t s
jumped into a big first half lead
and cut off Tech's last gap in the
final moments. The winners had
a one point lead with six seconds
remaining until Chuck Cotton,
who made good on 17 of 19 free
throws came through with a pair
from the foul line for the final
margin.
Kent Slate s defeat enabled idle
Miami, Ohio to take over sole
possession of the conference lead.
