are wondering who would
want to blow up prelly Mrs.
Kathryn Morris, 33, with a bomb
and why.
"Someone with a definite knowl
edge o( explosives and with a
strong reason to kill her," says
-Police Chief Joe O'Connor of sub
urban El Cajon.
The brother of a man arrested
In the case says he believes the
bomber thinks -Mrs. Morris knows
who killed a Nevada gambler.
But Chief O'Connor said there
were only two possible motives

Esther Fernlund, and the dishes
were washed by Dick Derry and
Ishmael Dick.
Mrs. Fernlund received a gift of
emblem earrings in recognition of
her years as noble grand.
A humorous poem was read by
Gertie Dick.
The Rebekah Social Club is
planning a card party for some
time in February.

Jack Silver, 42, San Diego phar
macist, who had been booked on
suspicion of attempted murder,
was arraigned on a San Diego po
lice charge Thursday of illegal
possession of narcotics, with bail
set at $5.0iXI. His preliminary
hearing was set for Feb. 2.
O'Connor said the attempted
murder booking was dropped
pending investigation by the hBI
and postal inspectors.
Mrs. Morris, who is separated
from her husband, has been the
target of bombs twice.
The second bomb was in a
Christmas package, never deliv
ered because she had moved. The
first was last Nov. 4 when a bomb
exploded outside the apartment
she occupied with her daughter,
Tonya, 2.
Mrs. Morris, who came here
last April after separating from
her husband, Robert, in Chicago,
said she did not know why any
one would want to kill her.-

Just Dessert

got their just dessert Thursday

son Parkway spotted a car sidc-
swiping several cars. Thev gave
chase and captured Francis Ro
mano, 26, and his brother, John
23, both of the Bronx.
In the car, which police said was
stolen, were a revolver, a pistol.
and the pie. The brothers were
booked on charges of assault,
robbery and violation of the Sulli
van (anti-weapons) law.

Sent To Jail

Lewislon, Idaho, man is going to
the Oregon State Penitentiary
just 16 days after his release from
the federal prison at McNeil
Island, Wash.
Robert Lee Robinett, 33, Thurs'
day was sentenced to 15 years in
the state prison after pleading
guilty to holding up an Elgin.
Ore., service station Tuesday
night.
Robinett fled in a stolen car
after the holdup, only to abandon
It after the state police shot out
a headlight. About 12 hours after
the robbery, state police appre
hended Robinett in a stolen pick
ud truck.

Group Announces
Minimum Wage
SALEM (API The state Wage
and Hour Commission Thursday
established a minimum wage of
$1 an hour for women and minors
in factories.
The old minimum of 65 cents
was established in 1948.
It brings the minimum to the
same level as adopted by the
federal government for industries
in interstate commerce.
The commission also rulea that
time and a half pay must be
paid for overtime after 8 hours
a day. This replaces a provision
that straight time should be paid

have joined the Klamath Air Search
and Rescue Unit to assist in the
group's water search and rescue
work. They are Ken Brown. Leon
V. Spencer and Dee Valentine.
A skin diver s club at Salem has
offered services anywhere in Ore-
on on call and the state board
of aeronautics will fly the mem
bers wherever called. The rrnort

KLAMATH COUNTY FARM BUREAU members kicked off their 1959 membership driv.
with a "man-siied" breakfast at the Henley Grange Hall. Goal of the drive is 100 new
names added to the rolls to tally 545 farm families in the county. Lloyd Hankins, Bo
nanza, president, said the drive will end Monday, January 19. The Farm Bureau is
pledged to work for advancement of the farmer and the community. Anyone wishing

NEW YORK (AP) - Lisa Rose
Chionchio, kidnaped from a Brook
lyn hospital 2'.2 hours after she
was born on Jan. 2, is home with
her happy parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chionchio
called at St. Peter's Hospital
Thursday and took Lisa Rose, now
13 days old, home for keeps.
Earlier the Chionchios were
among 10 witnesses appearing be
fore a grand jury hearing testi
mony in the case of Mrs. Jean
Iavarone, 43, charged with taking
the baby from its hospital crib.
Mrs. Iavarone was arrested last
Sunday night in her Brooklyn
apartment, where the baby was
found in good health. The child
was returned to the hospital for
observation.

tax evasion trial Thursday indi
cated the former Teamsters' Un
ion chief charged the union for
hotel bills despite travel expense
allowances totaling $22.50 a day.

sheets showing the bills were paid

Mrs. Ann Watkins Kotin of Los
Angeles, testified Wednesday Beck
often took union business trips
which would keep him on the road
as much as 2.i days a month.
Thursday's testimony came aft
er Joe McEvoy, a beer salesmanJ
told the court he made $40,000 on
money loaned to him by Beck,
whom he described as "like a
second father" to him.
McEvoy, who once was hired
as a bodyguard for Beck's family
following a 1956 kidnap scare
against Dave Beck Jr., said he
borrowed $35,000 from tne ex
Teamsters boss in 1953.
McEvoy said he used the money
to buy stock in a company wnien
invested Teamsters' funds in real
estate and in. 1957 sold the slock
for $75,000.
Beck is charged with evasion
of $240,000 in income taxes during
1950-53. .

Potato Stocks
Show Increase
WASHINGTON (AP) Oregon
had more than four million hun
dredweight of potatoes ' on hand
Jan. 1, helping push up the stocks
of potatoes held by growers and
local dealers nationally to 18 per
cent above a year ago.
The agriculture department
Thursday said stocks Jan. 1 were
106.800.0IK) hundredweight, com
pared with 90,600,000 a year ago.
That followed a month in which
usage of potatoes was reported
to have been the highest in 10
years-.
Oregon had 4.150.000 hundred
weight of potatoes on hand Jan.
Idaho had 24.500.000 hundred
weight.

plans he drew for a new church
James C. Mackenzie said in the

Dip Slightly
PORTLAND (AP) - Oregon's
liquor revenues dipped slightly in
1958 from $44,506,344 in 1957 to
$44,246,707 last year.
The Oregon Liquor Control Com
mission said Thursday nearly a
third of the money was turned
back to state and local govern
ments. '

said $13,013,401 was turned over
to the state general fund: $1,899.11
to incorporated cities; and the re
mainder to counties and the cen
sus fund.
Librarian Given
State Position
SALEM (AP) Constance H.
Grier, librarian of the city li
brary at University City. Mo.,
was appointed Thursday as as
sistant librarian of the Oregon
Stale Library.
The appointment, effective Feb.
16, was made by State Librarian
Eloise Ebert.
She received her training at
Washington University and St.
Louis Library School. She has
been librarian at University City
for 15 years.
VIOLATIONS
SALEM (AP) State police dur
ing December arrested 4,561 per
sons for violating motor vehicle
laws, and warned 9,266 others.
There were 1,331 arrests and
84 warnings for violations of the
basic speed law. There also were
81 arrests for drunken driving,
and 63 for reckless driving.
