Jake Gregg, 135 pound scrapper

been matched with Lakcview's Ken
O'Leary, in another of the feature
bouts on the coming Little League
Baseball Park benefit program slat
ed for Klamath Auditorium, Thurs
day, January 22, it was reported
today by co-matchmakers Buck Da
Vidson and Jerry Jennings.
Gregg, a very able puncher, has
been training under Jennings in the
past and from now until fight-time
will work under Billy Sunday who
has appeared on many local cards
in the past few years. Gregg is
training in the YMCA.
His opponent, O'Leary, is a mem

and wears an Oregon State AAU
Novice championship belt in the 135
pound division. 0 Leary is entered
in the Portland Golden Gloves. He
lost a one-point split decision to
Everett Capps, Burns, the North
west AAU title-holder who was a
finalist in the National competition
In Boston.
The Gregg-O'Leary pairing is the
second match to be arranged so

Seattle Cage Mentor
Talented Sax Player
By JACK 11EWINS
SEATTLE (AP) If the axe
ever falls on the coaching career
Vince Caizetta, the young head
man of Seattle University basket
ball can snatch his saxophone out
of storage and hardly miss a pay
day.
He nas been a card carrying
member of the American fedora
tion of Musicians for 18 years.
Now 33. Vince confesses he
hadn't touched lip to horn for 10
years when his secret talent was
discovered at a recent ball. Some
one who knew of it pushed Gu-
ictta to the band stand, handed
him a sax and backed away. After
I few preliminary toots the head
basketball coach took Sweet
Georgia Brown for a jaiz ride and
the orchestra leader tried to hire
him.
For a moment, there. Buddy
Mason was back in business. Be
fore World War II Vince for a
time had his own lS-piere band,
"Buddy Mason and His Orches
tra." He was Mason.
The band played in Connecticut
Massachusetts and New York and
Vince occasionally was tenor sax
with small night club combos. "1
thought seriously of making a ca
reer of music." he recalls. "But I
was thinking just as seriously
about medicine and athletics.
Vince and several ol his yoimg
friends had taken up music as a
hobby. The arrival of the war cut
jhort his musical adventures and
when Cazzetta graduated from the
Army's 95th Division in 1!M6 he
made his choice among music,
medicine and muscle.
"I don't regret it," says Vince.

FALL RIVER - The McCloud
Loggers staged a come from be

cagers 33-27 here Saturday night.
Although the Loggers got off to
a 10-8 lead in the first period of
play tncy hit the doldrums in the
second frame and scored only
three points while the Fall River
five kept plugging away The
count at halftime was 17-13 for
Fall River.
In (he second half of the test
the Loggers began to take hold
and grabbed the lead for keeps
midway in the third stanza. From
here on they were never seriously
challenged.
Al Fabhrini and Louie Tallcrico,
both of McCloud, shared scoring
honors: each had eight points.
A tough defensive contest, the
game was noticeably clean. Mc
Cloud got only eight free throw
chances and hit five of those. Fall
River collected 7-13. The Loggers
scored a neat .450 from the field.

Cazzetta has not followed the
program of another horn playing
hoop coach who soothed his play
ers with music in the dressing
room. That was Bill Borcher,
former Oregim mentor, trumpeter
and now a Pacific Coast Confer
ence basketball referee. (Another
sporls figure who doubles in music
is Bill Miineoy, sax playing driver
of the unlimited speedboat, Miss
Thriftway.)
The coach doesn't feel his play
ers need musical stimulant. Seat
tle was runner-up to Kentucky last
year in the National Collegiate
Athletic Assn. (NCA.V tourney
and had won 9 out of 12 games
this season at last look.
The horn purchased for him by
the late Frank Cazzetta when
Vince was a small boy may not
have been played for a decade but
it still is at the Cazzetta home in
New Britain. "I'll never sell it,"
he soys. "My dad deprived him
self of things he needed to buy it
(or me."
And he just might have to send
lor it. Lightly kidded by his play
ers at a squad meeting. Cazzetta
promised them: ,
it you win all your games
from now on I'll get right out in
the middle of the court after the
last one and play 'Sweet Charley

Set Battles
For Tonight
A full slate of Klamath County
B basketball activity tonight finds
the league's top four teams sched
uled for tough battles to maintain
or better their spots on the lad
der.
The feature game of the night
finds the Malin Mustangs and the
Chiloquin Panthers, who are tied
for third, clashing on the Chiloquin
court while the Bly Bobcats, who
moved back into a tie for first
place by defeating Merrill last
Friday face a real challenge from
the Sacred Heart Trojans on the
academy floor.
The co-holder of the lop rung,
the Merrill Huskies, are rated the
favorite over the Bonanza Antlers
whom they will meet at Merrill.
Bonanza has yet to break into the
win column in league action. Mer
rill has a 4-2 mark.
Rounding out the evening arc
the Gilchrist Grizzlies who move
south to try the Henley Hornets
Gilchrist, the bottom team on the
pole, was handed a 60-25 clobber
ing by Malin their last time out.
Henley, an A-2 school was edged
44-43 by Chiloquin. B school match
es with Henley do not count in con
ference standings.
The Mustang Panther clash
shapes as the toughest sctto of
the lour. Both squads have 3-2
records and each are vastly im
proved over their early season
form.
The Bobcats kept the Huskies
under their thumb in one of the
hardest defensive battles of the
campaign when they trimmed
Merrill 35-28 at Bly to extend their
homecourt jinx over the Huskies,
last Friday. Bly has op its roster
the league's top-scorer. Jerry Pat
zkc, who had been pounding away
at a 24.0 clip until the Merrill
match when he was held to his
lowest total to date, seven points.
The Bonanzans. who have yet
to reach what is considered their
true potential, will have their
hands full with the Huskies who
will do their best to wipe out the
sting of the loss to Bly.

Celtic Coach Claims
World's Greatest '5'
NEW YORK (NEA) The Bos
ton Celtics lost the National Bas
ketball Association title to the St.
Louis Hawks last year with Bill
Russell, the big man, useless with
u broken ankle.
It showed the Celtics could not
cet by with anything less than
their Bob Cousy-Bill Sharman-Rus-sell
alignment, no matter how
good the players are individually.
And this season, with Cousy now
.10 and hobbled by a bad ankle, the
Celtics got off sluggishly.
It seemed in order, tnen, to give
the Celtics who until Russell's
injury last year were considered
the best basketball team ever tol
play a close inspection this sea
son tor smns ot deterioration.
'Go look, Red Auerbach snort
ed. He was standing in the tunnel
leadinc to the Boston dressing
room at Madison Square Garden
before the club he coaches took the
floor to play the New Y'ork hnick-,
crbockers.
'I got the greatest team in the
world." he snapped. "Cousy was
slowed up by the ankle. We tried
him on it and he didn't go, so
we took him out of there until he
was ready. Russell was sick for a
while. Frank Ramsey had a bad
back. But they're fine now. And
you can see that in two minutes.
Injuries, mainly eariy in me
year, are bound to hit us. This is a
running club. We run guys tight
out of the building. Anytime you
play like that you have to come
up with a bad ankte someplace."
On the court. Aueroacn s
thoughts were borne out. No mat
ter how many times you see the
Celtics play they still shock you
with what they can do.
Cousy brings the ball down
quickly, his face as impassive as
a big businessman wnicn ne is.
For his size, 6-2. he has huge, long-
fingered hands. Anybody who does
things well with his hands, from a
piano player to a card shark, has
big hands, cousy nanaios a Dan as
if he were dealing you blackjack in
Las Vesas.
Russell, 6-9, stays underneatn, in
a half-stoop, ready to leap for a
rebound.
Bill Sharman, his mouth set in
what looks like a grin but actually
is grim, teeth-together concentra
tion, moves with Cousy in the
back. Tom Heinsohn. the 6-7 crew
cut kid who shoots from anywhere.
at any time, likes to get into the
right corner. Jim Loscutoff. the
fifth man, is 6-5. and he shoots
from the side and tries to stay un
der for rebounds as much as pos
sihle.
From this set-un, the Celtics
shoot you dizzy. Sharman's one
hander is soft and the' scorebooks
show its accuracy. On a drive,
Cousy is intolerable for defenders
and he'll stop in the middle of one
and drop in a one-hander.

Extended Meet
PORTLAND (AP) The Port
land Turf Assn. Monday asked the
State Racing Commission- to ex
tend its meet to 50 days this year
at the Portland Meadows track
The association would begin its
season May 1 and end July
allowing four more days of racing
than last year.
Multnomah Kennel Club asked
for a 50-day dog racing season
at the club's track, June 26
through Sept. 2.

have become (amous at race

past few years. I
any
meet From
Richard Sanderville. Tb
y are
team with this operation. On de
fense, Russell performs just as he
did in college. He stays near the
foul line, in what amounts to the
only one man zone in history, and
any time somebody drives for the
basket, up goes Russell. He pogos
off the floor, his hands high and
lingers outstretched, and most of
the time the man with the ball has
to stop dead and pass it back to
start another play all over.
'It's senseless to try to get by
him. Fuzzy Levane of the Knick
erbockers says. "He is too much.
He has gotten to be a mental block
for every player in the league."
In the middle of this, Cousy and
Sharman are ball - hawking.
Their hands flash for interceptions.
Cousy takes liberties. He chases
the ball. Russell can pick up his
man, he knows that.
With this, a Cousy solo fast
break is commonplace.
Forget that they lost the title last
year. One look at the Celtics in ac
tion tells you they are all they are
supposed to be the greatest
team the game has ever known.
