Oregon drivers should remember
to keep cars well ventilated, even
m cold weather, the Department of
Motor Vehicles said today.
Failure to do so can result in
carbon monoxide poisoning, which,
in itself, can prove fatal and may
be indirectly responsible for a num
ber of traffic accidents each year
for which no apparent reason can
be found, other than driver inat
tention or "asleep at the wheel,"
Department officials said one
window should always be left slight
ly open when driving and, m heavy
traffic, it's wise to turn off the
air-intake blower whenever stop
ping directly behind another ve
hicle to prevent its exhaust fumes
from being drawn Into your car.
Drivers also were reminded to
open garage doors before starting
cars, lo warm up the engine
in a closed garage is inviting an
accumulation of the dangerous gas.
Finally, car owners are remind
ed that the best way to prevent
carbon monoxide from entering the
car in excessive amounts is to
make sure the exhaust system
works properly. . ,
