The new year's day quiet of Chicago's northwest side was broken
' suddenly by a series of echoing sounds: the raucous blast of an
automobile horn, the screaming protest of skidding tires, the hoarse
cry of a man, and the roar of an engine as a hit-and-run driver raced
away before anyone caught a glimpse of his car.
By the time police arrived, a crowd had gathered around the un
conscious figure sprawled on the street.
"He's banged up pretty bad," said an officer, "but maybe we can
save him." He strode to his two-way radio and called for an
ambulance. While waiting, he tried to make the victim comfortable.
Another officer moved through the crowd, asking questions. Nobody
had seen the accident, though several had heard the sounds that
accompanied it
