AP's Female Athlete

Althea Gibson, the temporarily
retired queen of tennis, today had
mother glorious chapter added to
her Cinderella story. The one
lime tomboy of Harlem was chos
en the outstanding female athlete
of 1938 in the annual Associated
Press yearend poll.
This is the second straight year
the tall, tenacious New Yorker has
been awarded the honor by
nationwide panel of sportswriters
and sportscasters. She won it
again by a whopping margin m
recognition of her second succes
ive sweep of thf U.S. and Wim
bledon championships.
It elevated the 31-ycar-old star
among the all-time greats of sport
a position she had been aiming
for ever since she broke into the
major tournament set.
Althea received 133 first place
votes out of a possible 202 and
456 points. Points were counted on
a basis of three for first place
two for second,' one for third.
Carol Hciss, the blonde, pretty
18-year-old world figure skating
champion from New York, was a

Oscar Robertson and Cincinnati
have slumped a bit, but Big 0
and the Bearcats are tops in ma
jor college basketball scoring

. Robertson, the All-America who
took the individual scoring crown
as a sophomore last season, has
' (lipped below a 40-point average
for the first time this season, ac
cording to NCAA Service Bureau
statistics of games through last
Saturday. He's only averaging 38.3
(down from 42.7) after scoring 27
points as Cincinnati beat St. Louis
47-50.
That also shaved the unbeaten
Bearcats' output a bit, but they
jumped from second to first in the
team race with a 91.2 average,
They had been rolling at a 95.7'
point-a-game clip, but moved up
as Ohio University plunked from
a bold 101.7 average to 83.5 and
skidded from first to eighth.
Jimmy H a g a n ol Tennessee
Tech, up from fifth place, became
the new challenger to Robertson's
runaway. Hasan scored 45 points
against Louisiana Tech and upped
his average to 33.0, passing Mis
sissippi State s Bailey Howell,
Who now is third with a 32.1 aver
age.
Pittsburgh's little Don Hennon,
another All America, and Jon
Cincobox of Syracuse round out
the top five In individual scoring.
Hcnnon's game average is ' 29.7.
Cincebox has a 27.0 average.

Banks, the circuit's Most Valti

slugging title with a 614 mark.
The olficial statistics showed
Bank? collected 379 total bases in
G17 times at bat.
Willie Mays of San Francisco,
runner-up to Richie Ashburn in
the batting race, also finished sec
ond in slugging. Mays had 350
total bases in 600 tries for a .583
slugging percentage.
Hank Aaron of Milwaukee was
third with .546, followed by Frank
Thomas of Pittsburgh and Stan
Musial of St. Louis with .528 each.
Ashhurn, the Phillies' lead off
man, led the league in bases on
balls with 97. Harry Anderson,
also of the Phils, struck out the
most times. 95.
Musial tied a league recoid by
