The annual Christmas party for
members of the Lindley Heights
Home Extension Unit was held De
cember 10 at Joan's Kitchen at the
fairgrounds v ith 14 members, sev
en children and two guests, Mrs.
Jean Caster and Mrs. Myrtle Al
len, present.
New members greeted were Mrs.
Ruth Caster and Mrs. Gee.
Mary Schlegel taught knitting.
Lois Book was absent. Kathryn
Billing, vice chairman, presidec
Christmas carols were sung with
Kathryn Smith at the piano.
A PROJECT for Christmas 1959 should bo to have Klam
e:th Falls Christmas events listed in the Christmas calendar
in the center section of Richfield Oil Company's Christ
mas Carol Book, the cover of which is reproduced here.
This 16-page booklet is available from local Richfield
dealers without charge as the company's contribution
to a joyous Christmas season in Klamath Falls. Last year,
approximately 6,000 copies of the annual booklet, with
words and music of seven well knowrt carols, were dis
tributed here according to T. J. O'Harra, local Richfield
manager.

Walnuts, traditionally used in fes
tive holiday menus, have been des
ignated by the LSDA as the plentiful-food-to-feature
during the week
of December 14-20. The entire
commercial production is grown
in Oregon and California. Califor
nia produces 78,000 tons while Ore
gon produces 6.500 tons for com
mercial use. USDA grades for wal
nuts are U.S. No. 1, U.S. No. 2
or U.S. No. 3.
The large wrinkled nuts have a
sweet, creamy meat that blends
with many other foods. Walnut
are widely usable in recipes that
require a sweet, less-oily nut meat
As with most foods, walnuts are
surrounded by a cloud of ancient
superstitions. In past centuries,
many people attributed an evil na
ture to the tree itself.
One story goes that a walnut
tree in ancient Rome was tie
stroyed because folk suspected the
evil soul of Nero was luing in it
Another famous walnut tree grew
in the Italian town of Benevento.
It was cut down when the pagans
there were converted to Christian
ity. and reportedly, the devil was
hiding under the tree.
In some parts of the old world
peasants used to beat walnut trees
with sticks, and it was often said
that if you walked beneath a wal

the Muffin Mixers held another
meeting. Our president, Audrene
Cunningham, called the meeting to
order.. We all made cookies. We
put icing on the cookies. We each
had one cookie.

For nutritious munching, spread
two walnut halves with cream
cheese, press together, and use on

fruif salad plates.
Parboil walnut halves three min
utes. Drain well and place on bak
ing pan. Spread walnuts into a sin
gle layer. Dot with butter and
bake about half an hour in mod
erate oven, stirring frequently. Re
move from the oven when toasted

Drive reports receipts during the
past week of $2,025.69, bringing the
total raised so far in this year's
campaign to $124,424.56, with a
goal of $150,000.
Additional, receipts should be
chalked up within the next day or
two, when reports" from Merrill,
Malin and Bly on their "Blitz Cam
paign" reach headquarters. In the
immediate Klamath Falls area, this
blitz sale ot Success Dollars, Fri
day and Saturday, brought in $765.-49.
The other $1,260.20 received dur
ing the past week was mailed or
brought to the United Fund office,
either as a result of readins news
paper articles or of receiving per
sonal letters. The largest contribu
tion was one of $200.
