Thor, Mom Rocket Heart,
Blows Up After Launching

A powerful Thor intermediate
ranse missile the heart of moon
rocket Pioneer blew apart with a
brilliant flash shortly after launch
ing early today.
It was the fifth straight time
that a ballistic weapon had ex
ploded in spectacular style in the
past few months. The shattered
sections of the missile appeared
to plunge into the Atlantic just off
the Cape.
The Air Force announced a
malfunction occurred about 30 sec
' onds after liftoff and that the mis
sile was destroyed by the range
safety officer.
The 65-foot war rocket blasted
aloft at 3:53 a. m. from a huge
pool of orange flame. It began to
Veer left and right almost imme
diately. After about 25 seconds, still
pouring out a thin trail of flame,
the Thor suddenly jerked to the
left. At that point, the range safe
ty officer pressed a destruct but
ton and the missile burst apart.
Flaming debris rained ino the
water. A huge black cloud hung
against the moonlit Florida sky.
Missile men hoped the launch
ing would give them a preview of
me next Air force Pioneer moon
rocket shoot which the National
Aeronautic and Space Administra
tion says will take place late this
week.
In an adjacent tower less than
500 yards away stood a multistage
Thor which is believed to be moon
rocket No. 3.
The upper section of the tower
was covered by a canvas wind
shield but the first-stage Thor was
plainly visible.
Today's Thor launching was the
first in three months and the 19th
in the Air Force's ambitious flight
test program aimed at making the
missile operational.
Since Sept. 17 when a Redstone
missile roared across the Atlan
tic successfully, five ballistic weap
ons have blown apart shortly after
launching. In addition, to the
Thor. they were the Atlas 1CBM,
the Army Jupiter 1RB.M, and two
naval Polaris missiles.
.During the period, however,
three satellite rockets blasted off
to good starts a Vanguard, the
amazingly successful Pioneer, and
the Army's Beacon balloon satel
lite.

do not have the money to pay for
such a large-scale relocation.

Solon Pleased
By Election
BAKER (AP)-Rep. Al Ullman,
reelected to his second term in
Oregon's sprawling 2nd District,
said today that "I'm extremely
pleased with the vote."
Ullman said his immediate
plans are indefinite, but added he
may leave here soon to join his
Navy reserve unit in Washington,
D.C., for a brief training period.
The Baker Democrat defeated
Marion Weatherford, an Arlington
wheat rancher making his first
bid for public office.
Ullman took an early lead in
the voting Tuesday night, and he
picked up strength throughout the
lengthy counting of votes.

Shakespearean Festival
Fund Drive Planned

ber 12 has been set as the open
ing date for the Oregon Shakes
pearean Festival's building fund
campaign. The organization old
est of its kind in the Western Hemi
sphere is currently without a
stage. The former structure, out
grown by the festival's expansion
and for three years condemned as
hazardous, has now been razed.
There is need of $275,000 to build
a i new theater in time for the

LONDON (UPI) -Four Ameri
can scientists reported success to
day in several dry runs with Brit
ish scientists in an Anglo-American
effort to keep tabs on the
third U. S. moon rocket to be
launched soon.

Hammond, 76, the dean of Clack
amas County attorneys . and a
state Bar member more than 50
years, died here Monday night.
Survivors include the widow, a
daughter and three sons, William

Killed In Mishap
EUGENE (AP)-An 82-year-old
woman Tuesday was crushed be
neath a gravel truck.
Coroner Fred Buell said the
truck struck Mrs.' Katherin Cre
shaw of Eugene as it backed
down a hill.
The truck had back-up warning
horns, Buell said, but neighbors
told police the woman was partly
deaf.
