Wold, who was born on Thursday

The girl might make it. As you

Politicians In Philippines
Also Cater To The Ladies
By GAY PAULEY

NEW YORK (UPI) - Politi

'Will Never Marry Actor1
Says Filmland Divorcee
By VERNON SCOTT
UPI Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD (UPH-This year
will go down in Movietown annuals
as the year of wrecked mar
riages, with more than a dozen
casualties counted among the
stars.
Most spectacular rift was the
Debbie Reynolds Eddie Fisher
parting.
But there were other crackups
-ary i,ram and Betsy Drake,
JMarion Brando and Anna Kashfi,
Rock and Phyllis Hudson, Esther
Williams and Ben Gage, Jack and
Rhoda Borgnine.
Also kicking over the traces are
Guy and Sheila Madison, Rhon
da Fleming and Dr. Lew Morril,
Peggy Leo and Dewey Martin,
Pier Angeli and Vic Damone, and
Sammy 1 Davis Jr. and Loray
White.
A few others are tottering on
the brink1.
Latest to hit the skids arc John
Barrymoro Jr. and redh aired
Cara Williams. Married six years,
the youthful pair called it quits
this month.
Most stars shy away from dis
cussing their marital explosions,
hut Cara has a theory about Hol
lywood marriages and why they
don't work. She's a clo.se friend
of Anna Kashfi and Debbie Rey
nolds and attributes their mar
riage failures to the. same ele
ment that destroyed her happi
ness wilh young Barrymoro.
"An actor should never marry
an actress," Cara said. "It's as
simple as that. 1 know I'll never
marry anyone in show business
again.
"The Insecurities of being a
performer arc difficult enough
wiin jusi one memner 01 the lam-i
lly involved. But when both of:
them are worrying about where
their next picture is coming from
it is impossible.
"When things go wrong Ihe cou
ple begins to take it out on one
another.
"If a wife is working and her
husband isn't, the arguments
start. Basically you both know
what's at the bottom of the trou
ble, but you never mention it.
You're afraid to.
"It's even worse if the actor is
a big star but the wife isn't get
ting many parts. Pretty soon she
starts nagging her husband for
roles too.
"Even if they're both success
ful they never know when or
where the next picture is comin"
from. It amounts to an on-and-
off life of unemployment. If
you're not busy in this town the
word gets around. Jobs become
hard to find."
Cara says she didn't care about
career while she was married
to Barrymore. But now that she's
on her own, the shapely actress
is booming for activity. She's giv
en a chance for an Oscar this
year for her performance in "The
Uefiant Ones," and currently is
negotiating for a Broadway play.
John and I never worked to
other." she said. "I always be
lieved he could do better by himself.
"Our marriage had loo many
insecurities based on his career.
the same is true of Debbie and
Anna and their marriages. There
has to he some security in a mar
riage, or else it doesn't work.
Darned few Hollywood mar
riages between performers have
lasted over the years. That's why
I'll never make the same mistake
ngain.
Mrs. Gonzalez moved into poli
tics when Ramon Magsaysay was
running for the presidency. "Poli-
tics had been another world to
me," she said, although her fa
ther had been a senator, repre
senting the Liberal Parly. She's
a Nationalista.
"I was more interested in bal
let," said Mrs. Gonzalez.
But at Magsaysay's urging, she
headed up the women's division
of his campaign and after his
election, was named to the cabi
net, as social welfare administra
tor. In 1953, she decided to run for
the Senate and stumped the coun
try like any other politician. "But
no kissing babies," she laughed.
I save that for home." There
are two children in the family,
a 12-year-old son from her mar
riage to the late Herman Warns,
and a 15-months-old daughter, by
her husband, Gonzalo, an attor
ney.
, Mrs. Gonzalez topped the party
slate with a whomping margin of
.tou.uw) more votes than anv other
candidate. She explained that in
the Philippines eight senators are
chosen each election, and all run
as candidates at-large, instead of
from a specific district, for a six
year term. Members of the low
er house are selected by district.
The Philippines has only one
woman in the House, but the
ladies have moved rapidly into
both elective and appointive nub-
lie office since they won. the right
to vote in 195, she said serving
as judges, mayors, councilmcn,
and on boards of education. The
Philippines has one woman am
bassador to Vietnam.
New Mideast Crisis Looms
As Iraq Leader Arrested
WASHINGTON (AP
arrest in Iraq of a former revolu
tionary leader with pro-Nasser
leanings may spark a new crisis
in the Middle East.
Baghdad radio announced Tucs
day night that Col. Abdcl Salam
Aref had been seized and will
be tried on a charge of plotting
against the country s interests
Aref was a close associate ol
Premier Abdel Kerim Kassem in
the first weeks of their rule fol
lowing the overthrow of the re
gime of King Faisal in July.
Subsequently, Aref was removed
from both top military and cabi
net posts and was given an ap
pointment as Iraqi ambassador to
West Germany. He was arrested
the Baghdad radio announcement
said, when he returned to Iraq's
capital city without permission.
U.S. omcials said there was no
doubt that there had been a power
struggle between the two men re
volving around a critical issue of
policy. Aref favored very close
association or union with the Unit
ed Arab Republic of President
Carnal Abdel Nasser, while Kas
sem wanted and has followed a
more independent policy based on
neutralism in foreign relations.
home authorities here thought
that the seizure of Aref by Kas
sem s government might force
The Some vigorous reaction from Nas-
sem against that government or
Kassem personally. But they
commented also that if Nasser
felt his prestige was not directly
involved or the force of his Arab
unity movement not impaired, he
could choose to ignore the whole
affair.
Experts said the action against
Aref also could precipitate a po
litical showdown inside Iraq. They
reasoned that Kassem probably
would not have acted unless he
had been confident of his own
power." But the possibility re
mained that his hand might have
been forced by discovery of a plan
for action against him on the part
of Aref. Kassem suppressed early
in October a military conspiracy
allegedly involving Aref supporters.
The Middle East area has been
relatively quiet for some weeks
now, and U.S. and British troops
have been withdrawn from Leban
on and Jordan, where they were
sent after the Iraqi revolt.
But the political structures in
several countries, including Jor
dan, are still very shaky and any
sensational development in Iraq
would almost certainly have re
percussions throughout the area.
