International Church Meet
To Act On Plans For Peace
ST. LOUIS (AP)-The Interna
tional Convention of Christian
Churches acts today on a fervent
ly stated plan for world peace.
; It excited more discussion than
' anything to come before the 8.500
ministers and laymen attending
the six-day convention.
The practical steps it suggests
contemplate birth control educa
tion in overpopulated areas of the
I world and admission of Comrcu-
nist China to the United Nations.
Both these ideas were attacked
'when the 13-page document was
processed by the convention's
'. Committee on Recommendations.
.This panel of 201 men .and women
elected by state conventions of
Christian Churches, and by pro
vincial conventions in Canada, re
sisted efforts to tone down the
resolution. It was passed on to
the convention's General Assem
bly as a statement of position.
Some sought to label it merely a
document for study.
"What is needed today," it says,
"is the moral and ethical leader
ship which should be coming from
an informed Christian commun
ity." The, statement urges universal
disarmament under a United Na
tions inspection system. It calls
for a suspension of nuclear weap
ons tests. It urges limits on the
production and storage of long
range missiles, international con
trol of the production of nuclear
materials and U.N. control of
space exploration.
several of its proposals are de-
political hope for peace."
To build the foundations of
peace, the plan suggests: equality
of opportunity for the races, free
dom of communications, free in
ternational trade, financial and
technical help for have-not na
tions and independence for colo
nies and satellite nations.
Today's preoccupation with
peace broke into a mounting con
vention emphasis on Christian un
ity. Most speakers have castigated
the Christian Churches themselves
for losing sight of their heritage
and adding to denominational di
vision with their own brand of
doctrinal pride and prejudice.
The convention climaxed this
Monday with five declarations on
Christian unity. One asked the
churches to examine their own
unity. The other lour:
Asked the churches to increase
their financial support of - ihe
World Council o! Churches and the
National Council of Churches.
Asked church leaders to take
more steps toward a merger with
the United Church of Christ, itself
a still-in-process merger of the Co-gregational-Christian
Church and
the Evangelical and Reformed
Church.
Commended the Disciples Stu
dent Fellowship for its progress
toward merger next year with the
work of the United Presbyterian
Church and the Evangelical
United Brethren Church at col
leges and universities.
Endorsed the prospective mer
ger in 1961 of the World Council

Sunday also learned that McDer

least three bars before going ber

his victims one a convicted loan
shark and two others with minor
police records.
But detectives insisted they still
eked enough evidence to pin
point a reason for McDermott r-
action.
McDermott. 34. remained m
critical condition, unable to speak
in Roosevelt Hospital. He was re

lunshot wounds suffered as he
dueled with pursuing policemen on

McDermott, described by
shocked neighbors Sunday as
having given up drink five years

obnoxious with loud, boisterous
behavior, Olman told Inspector
Frederick Lussen.
Detectives who tried to retrace
McDermott's steps trom the time

least two beers and three whiskies
in three different bars. Witnesses
at the bars said McDermott did
not seem intoxicated nor did he
