Reds Extend
Cease-Fire
TAIPEI. Formosa (AP) The
Chinese Nationalists pushed their
restocking of the Quemoys today
as Red China stretched its cease
fire from one week to three.
Two LSTs discharged their am
munition and supply cargoes on
Quemoy's beach a few hours after
Peiping announced that the one
week cease-fire expiring last mid
night was being extended for two
more weeks.
Quemoy's civilians relaxed.
More farmers went to their pea
nut, sorghum and vegetable fields
than at any time since the Com
munists started their massive ar
tillery siege Aug. 23.
The activity center may now
shift to diplomatic talks in War
saw between Red China and the
United Slates. The eighth meeting
of ambassadors is Wednesday.
The Chinese Nationalists hailed
the second stage of the cease-fire
as another Communist defeat, but
were suspicious both of Commu
nist intentions and of the talks in
Warsaw.
Sampson Chen, government
spokesman, declared "we should
not let down our guard" because
the Communists probably would
use the next two weeks to prepare
their next move.
There was speculation that the
Nationalists were now prepared to
reply with a massive bombard
ment of their own if the Red
Chinese again open up.
Col. Douglas Lane, chief U.S.
military adviser on the island,
said on leaving for Formosa for
conferences that Quemoy now was
"in as good or better position"
supply-wise as on Aug. 23.
SF Bay Yields
Escapee Body
SAN FRANCISCO UPI The
body of convict Aaron Burgett
was recovered from the water
near Alcatraz Island Sunday, just
13 days after the Missouri bandit
made his bid to escape "The
Rock."
His badly decomposed body still
was clad in prison clothes, and of
ficials at Alcatraz said one clear
thumb print verified the identity.
Burgctt's escape effort was not
a desperate try, but apparently a
well-planned bid for freedom.
Slabs of plywood had been bound
to his feet with wire as substi
tutes for swim fins to help con
quer the turbulent one and a
quarter miles of bay between Al
catraz and San Francisco.
Burgett had extra socks under
his heavy brown boots, and his
trouser legs were bound at the
ankles with black plastic tape
presumably to prevent them from
ballooning during the long swim.
