ably one of the first of its kind, encircling the trunk of the Ponderosa pine. Claude
Shuck takes a look at the tire which probably has been in place for the last 20 or 30
years. The tree and tire are on the Maude Liskey Ranch on Meadow Lake, over the hill

stepped-up inoculation program to
day in the battle against the area's

Molner said lhat in addition to
emergency inoculation centers op
erated by his department, other
centers will be opened to groups
of at least 500 persons willing to
bear part of the expense. Such
groups will get Salk vaccine at
fl a shot but must arrange for a
place to give the shots as well as
for doctors and nurses.

cases and 16 deaths, compared
with 172 cases and 2 deaths last

ALTURAS ELEMENTARY
ALTURAS The resignation of the
.Alturas Elementary PTA presi
dent. Forest Moyer, who is mov
ing from Alturas to Lakeview, was
accepted by the members of the
group at the last meeting on Wed
nesday night, October 1. Almost
100 parents and teachers attended
the meeting in the grammar
school's all purpose room.
Mrs. Charles Demick expressed
appreciation Inr the work Moyer
lias done for the PTA and com
munity during his four years' res
idency in Alturas.
For the first time in the history
of the unit. Moyer was prcsenled
with i president's pin bearing the
name of the unit, which is to be
passed on from president to presi
dent. Chris Starr, junior past presi
dent of the unit, was presented
with a past president's pin.
The business session was high
lighted with the acceptance of the
budget for the year which was pre
sented by Mrs. Helen King, treasurer.
plaster cast of a clear footprint.
"The story behind this is that
there was a mentally deficient In
dian boy who was kept chained
by his parents," Corbett said.
"When this boy was 17 years old.
28 years ago, he broke the chains
and disappeared. The Indians
found his clothes but never saw
him again. They said he had ex
tremely large feet.
"We talked it over a great deal
and figured this man now must
be fi feet 7 inches to 7 feet 6
inches tall. We thought he might
weigh as much as 400 pounds. He
made firm footprints in hard
ground.
"Measuring the footprints for a
distance of more than 60 feet, we
found the average stride was 50
inches. We checked this against
the stride of a man 6 feet 4 inches
tall, with long legs, aitl his stride
was 30 inches.
"We were told Tiy people who
saw footprints made when this un
known man was running that they
were 10 feet apart.
"I know positively this is a hu
man being.
"It seems logical that it is this
Indian who disappeared and is
living wild. He does his traveling
at night. He has not molested any
one. We learned these tracks have
been appearing for the past 10
years."
Corbelt said Titmus is preparing
to set up camera traps in an ef
fort to obtain a photo of Big Foot.
