Ingrid Bergman Chats About 'Third Husband' And Her Future Plans
Editor's Note: In this last chap
ter of a five-part interview.
Ingrid Bergman discuses her
"third husband," Lars Schmidt,
and their plans to be married
when she is legally free to do so.
By RALPH COOPER
I Written For I PI)
Inzrid Bergman has a certain
Indefinable something ti.at enables
her, with no apparent effort, to
reach right to the heart of an
emotion and the hearts of an audi
ence at the same time.
It is this something, this qual
ity, which made her the star she
Is and it was the same quality
which led people to expect so
much of her in real life.
I asked lngnd about this qual
ity, and how she explained it.
I "I live and act as a normal per
iton. ' she sa;c. "I try to live a
i normal life and take a norma! in
terest in what's going on arour.d
ine. I'm interested in people, ho
they behave and uhy they behave
th? way they do."
Ingrid said there was one thir.g
she found it hard to tae an in
tercst in. politics, "althoush 1
know I should."
"I'm frightened of another war
. . .like everyone else." she shud
dered. "Everyone is frightened. . .
nobody wants one yet these
things happen. And try as I may
I cannot get interested in politics.
My husbands all three of them
have always been telling me.
'But Ingrtd you must know
about politics you embarrass
people. . .read the papers.'

i mean anything to me. . .and I al
ways say 'This I will do next year
when I get a break . . but I
never get a break. . .or next year
comes. . .and I never get around
to it."
i I reminded Ingrid that she had
lju-t said 'my nusbanda all three
' oi t.ncm "
"Did I say that ?" she demand
ed, and I said, "you did."
She threw back her head and
roared with laughter. Ten minutes
earlier Lars Schmidt had with
drawn discreetly down the moun-l
tamside wnere we were chatting,
so that I could be alone with In
grid. "When you go down tell him
about it and watch his face." she
said. "Teil him 'she keeps making
an embarrassing mistake by talk-
about her "third husband" '
and ask him what he's going to
do about it?"
Ingrid laughed again. "Tnat was
a little premature of me."
Then she looked thoughtful. "But
I've been surprised at the reac
tion this lime, and very relieved.
At first I thought, a trifle wearily
perhaps. 'Here we go again.'
"Rut it has not been like that
at all. Wherever I go people seem
pleased. . .and glad that I
happy."
I told Ingrid I hoped she would
find lading happiness, and she
said, with a girlish, impish grin
"I have high hopes!"
"That." I said, "is the wav ru
mors start. If you had been over
heard making that remark in any
bar or night club in London
Paris. . .Rome. . .the wires would
be buzzing around the world, and
by morning you would be hard at
it denying a secret marriage. You
really should he more careful. . .'
Ingrid nodded. "1 know. I know
I am always being told about it
If you'd read that Garbo said that
you would know it would not be
true, because good old Garbo nev
er says anything. But rue! How
ever s:lly it is. people know I
must have said it, because I open
my great big mouth too much
And too often.
"It's funny. . .because I don't
find it easy to talk to people and
I am really a very shy person
Because in Sweden we are very
polite people. You never say that
your house, or your dress, or your
children are anything at all. If
someone compliments you on your
dress you always say, 'But no.
this is an old rag. . .but your dress
is wonderful:
"When I went to America I was
almost shocked at the way people
said. es. I rather like it too.
They were proud of everything
their wives, their families, their
jobs, their cars. . .that was God's
own country! It took some getting
used to:
"Your career is re-established
and happiness has returned with
Lars, so the sooner you marry and
make a settled life for yourself
the belter. I said.
We shall marry as soon as we
are able to." Ingrid replied. "And
how long that will be we do not
know. We are waiting for the ver
dict of the Rome court, which is
deciding whether there was a mar
riage or not, and if there was.
whether it should be annulled.
They are not too optimistic. Over
2.000 applications are heard in
Rome for marrage annulments
each year, and only 30 are grant
ed. We realize the fact that those
involved are very much in the
public eye mignt prove a difficul
ty, and also the fact that Roberto
has already had one marriage an
nulled. "A Mexican divorce? that
would not be recognized in Italy.
And I want to be able to go back
to Italy whenever I want. If my
children were to be in Italy, and
I wanted to visit them suddenly,
I would not be able to if divorced
only in Mexico."
The solution may yet have to be
a Swedish divorce, which would
give Ingrid Swedish -nationality
again, and oe recognized in Italy.
The facts are that Rossellini
claimed their marriage was not

valid and Ingrid, through her so
licitors, agreed.
"This does not affect the status
of the children of the marriage."
Ingrid explained, "because in Ital
ian law, if a father accepts the
children as his own. then they are
legitimate, whether there has been
a marriage or not."
Meanwhile, as they attempt to
sort out the marriage tangle. In-
gnu and Lars travel regularly to
their dream house 25 miles out'
side Paris, in the village of Choi'
sil, near the Duke of Windsor's
home.
"It was once a mews," said In
grid, "Lars found it and bought
it readapting it for about $80,000.
"It has 22 rooms, but we have
taken out the whole of the interior
and are re-building it. We do not
want so many rooms, nor too
many servants. We want to live
comparatively simply, as we
would in Sweden. . .
"We want two large ground
floor rooms and a kitchen where
I can do my own cooking.
"The kitchen was in Mosaic; I
have changed that.
"We should find seclusion there,
because it is an eight acre estate
surrounded by a ten foot wall, and
Choisil is a small village with a
population of only 275.
"Soon it will be 280." said In
grid with a smile.

Crosby, Sir Of All Sons,
Sees DaughtGr In Future
By BOB THOMAS
AP Motion Picture Writer
HOLLYWOOD ' AP) Is tiere
a daughter n Bing Crosby's fu
ture? Bing thinks so.
"Next time we ll get a girl." hei
says confidently . I
this came out in a chat with
the show business great as he
worked on the first of his two
spectaculars for ABC this week.
In a mellow mood, he spoke of
his latest son, Harry Lillis Jr.,
his four older boys and their bur
geoning careers.
"We were kinda hoping for a
girl," he said, speaking for him
self and wife Kathy Grant. "But
that boy of ours is such a wonder
ful little fella that we're not at
ail disappointed."
Young Tex. as he is called for!
his mother's home state, is an ear
ly riser, Bing reported. But that's
all right because Bing is too. They
both get up around 6.
"Yes, I can handle a diaper
pretty well," the crooner smiled. I
"And I do a little singing to him
when I try to get him to sleep.
I carry him around and rock him::
they seem to like the movement:
at that age 12 months)."
The lad has already taken his
first journey His parents drove
him to their Pebble Beach home,
300 miles north, and he en-j
joyed the cool climate in contrast I
to Los Angeles' late summer heat
This week the entire Crosby clan
gathered for a dinner to honor Ion
Phillip and his bride, Las Vegas
showgirl Sandra Drummond. The
celebration seemed to belie re
ports of discord among Bing and
his boys.
"She's a very sweet girl," Bing
said. "She's got a good head on
her shoulders and she doesn't
drink or smoke."
Papa Crosby admitted that he
was surprised that his four older
boys appear headed for show biz
careers.
"I knew Gary would probably
try it, but I thought I had the
other three headed in different di
rections," he said.
