Dow Speaks To BPW Group

the featured speaker at the din
ner meeting of the Yreka Business
and Professional Women's Club on

high school girls from Y'reka High
School will be honored during the
dinner meeting in March. The sub
ject will stress career advance
ment with Mrs. Dorothy Johnson
as chairman. Installation of new
officers will highlight the April
meeting. Plans for May had not
as yet been discussed.
Mrs. Cordes then introduced
Mrs. Dnw as supervisor of the
Montague GOC.
Mrs. Dow related how the estab
lishment of GOC was first start
ed in 1941 by the office of civil
defense as an air defense system;
the difficulties encountered in re
cruiting civilian volunteers to man
observation posts but throush the
persistent efforts of trained per
sonnel of the Air Force, civilian
volunteers were manning posts in
all 48 states. With the completion
of the Distant Early Warning
iDEW) Line and further improve
ments in both electronics capabili
ty and wearions system, it w a s
possible to place all GOC on ready
reserve on January 1, 1958. Prac
tice and surprise alerts are called
once a month to establish how
quickly volunteers can be activat
ed in case of an emergency.
Other announcements made dur
ing the evening were thit the
Y'reka BPWC will join in the na
tionwide observance of National
Business Women's Week. October
5 through October 11. Plans will
include the appearance of at least
two officers or members on the
Yreka radio station KSYC for
interviewing.
The next business meeting of the
Y'reka club will be on October 14,
8 p.m. at the Y'reka Inn. The din-
