Hobby Group Vins Honors
The Klamalh Wildcats, local
hobby group, are making a name
for themselves in model airplane
circles throughout the area.
Last Sunday. Don DerMiner,
jpoiisor of the group, flew a Cess
na 172 from L i s t o n Aircraft
Service to Baker taking Mrs. Der
Miner, Dick Wickline and Larry
Burton. In the all-day competition,
the Klamath Kails contestants
came home with top honors.
More than Aim spectators, who
had paid 50 cents apiece to sec
the show, watched the first com
bat competition ever staged at
Baker. The three-hour event was
won by Wickline flying his 42-inch
wingspan Klite Streak. Burton
placed third with his 24-inch wing
span Sev Custom, a model rat
racer.
First place in the ral race was
token by Burton who won over
second place Wickline, heating his
plane by about nine miles an hour.
DerMiner placed second in the
carrier deck competition, one point
behind the first place winner alt
er the wind forced his plane into
a Ro around. His Navy Corsair
with a 36-inch wingspan won the
trophy for the finest finish and

The trip to Baker and return,
270 air miles, was made on Sun
day. Most of the return trip was
made as the moon was rising, Der
Miner said.
Nationalists Pressured To Go Along
WASHINGTON (AP)-The Unit
ed States is expected to put heavy
pressure on Nationalist China to
pull back forces from the off-
hore islands near Communist ter
ritory if it can get the Beds to
accept a cease-fire in the Formosa
area.
The line taken by Secretary of
State Dulles at a news conference
Tuesday strongly indicated that
the Eisenhower administration in
tends to exert much greater and
more restrictive influence on the
Nationalists than before.
Essentially Dulles held out to
Red China, and the Soviet Union
which supports it, the prospects
of a deal to pacify the Formosa
area. The first U.S. requirement
would be an end to the present
heavy Communist artillery attacks
on the inland of Quemoy.
Officials were hopeful that his
emphasis on possible major policy
changes to bring peace to the re
gion would win greater support for
the government's Formosa policy
at home and abroad.
He reiterated the U.S. determi
nation not to retreat under fire,
but talked mostly about arrange
ments that might be made if the
present limited combat could be
stopped.
Nationalist Chinese leader Chi
ang Kai-shek has stated his deter
mination to hold on to the offshore
islands and to defend them. Dulles
said that the Nationalists do not
always accept U.S. views "and we
don't accept their views in all re
spects." But he added that "I think that
if it ever came down to a point
where it was important practical
ly" to get a cease-fire agreement
and cut the Nationalist torces on
the offshore islands, "we would
find a way to agree at least I
hope so."
Dulles' talk about future possi
bilities covered three main points.
He said:
1. The Chinese Nationalists as
veil as the Chinese Communists
should agree to a renunciation of
the use of force in their dispute.
2. The Nationalists could not re
turn to the mainland "by their i
own steam" and the United States!
has no commitment of any kind I
to aid them to return. He was notj
even sure that Chiang would again!
be a leader on the mainland even
ii a revolution against the Com
munist regime were successful.
3. The United States considered
it foolish for the Nationalist gov
ernment to put into the offshore
islands as many troops as it now
has there. Those are estimated to
total well over 100,000.
