paid nearly one million dollars for

Originally, seven Negroes were
assigned to the Greensboro school
for this term. However, the moth
er of two children who had attend
ed the school last year requested
that they be reassigned to Negro
schools.
At Winston-Salem, a Negro sen
ior girl, returned to Reynolds High
School for her second year there.
The Winston-Salem School Board
also assigned three Negro children
lo the Easton Elementary School
for the first time, and parents of
more than 200 children had their
children reassigned to other
schools.
The Greensboro, Winston-Salem
and Charlotte school boards,
which admitted the Negro chil
dren to those white schools, also
rejected the reassignment applica
tions of a number of others. Some
of these have promised to carry
their cases to the federal courts.
North Carolina has relied for
the most part on a law which
gives local school boards full pow
er to assign children to schools.
This assignment law is similar io
one proposed in Virginia by the
Gray Commission, but which was
abandoned in favor of the policy
of massive resistance.
In court tests, the 4th Federal
Circuit Court of Appeals has held
that the North Carolina assign
ment law is not unconstitutional
on its face. The ruling was upheld
by the U.S. Supreme Court.
