TV Notes
By JACK CAVER
NEW YORK (UPD Here's an
odd thing. Not only are two of
television's most celebrated "low
comics" the stars of two of the
new season s most impressive dra
matic entries, but they achieved
the comedy pinnacle working on
me same program. They are
Jackie Gleason and Art Carney.
Jackie plus a moustache and
minus a few pounds has just fin
ished the teletape recording of
William Saroyan's prize play, "The
Time of Your Life," for use Oct. 9
on the CBS "Playhouse 90." Art is
now in rehearsal for the Sept. 22
telecast of Mary Chase's beloved
comedy, "Harvey," which will be
I he first "Show of the Month" on
CBS.
One who has observed the
flowering of Jackie Gleason's
moustache, grown especially for
his role in "The Time of Your
Life," says that it gives him an
amazing resemblance to Orson
Welles. By the time you see the
moustache on television Oct. 9, it
will have ceased to exist; the play
will have been teletaped a month
before and Jackie will have dis
pensed with the lip adornment in
the interest of his live weekly
variety half hour starting Oct. 3 on
CBS.
The new "Yancy Derringer" ad
venture scries on CBS got a built
in stunt man when Joch Mahoney
was hired to plav the hero. Stunt
work was his specially in the
movie industry before roles in
TV lifted him out of the ranks of
the daring unknowns.
The "Your Hit Parade" people
discovered an interesting tiling in
deciding to base their weekly se
lection of the nation's top 12 tunes
on surveys made by "The Bill
board." A study of many months
of the trade publication's listings
disclosed that if only the 10 top
songs were used as a base, the
program could be assured of no
inore than an average of one new
une a week. But by setting the
figure at 12, there was assurance
of three new numbers weekly, a
much more desirable variety.
Then it was suggested that 15
might be even better, but not so.
n this lot you could still count
on only three new ones weekly.
Hence, 12.
