Reforestation
Groups Visit
Sugar Hill
The Reforestation Committee ot
the California area has made a
recent inspection of the Sugar Hill
plantations on the Modoc National
Forest. Visiting foresters with the
committee included Jose Ayala and
Carlos De Juan, of Spain, Bing
Yen Yang, of Republic of China,
and professor Dietrich Muelder, of
University of California.
The Sugar Hill plantations have
long been an attraction to foresters
of the California area. Up to the
present time, over 6,500 acres have
been reforested by planting in the
North Warner Mountains between
Fandango Creek and North Fork of
Davis Creek. This reforested area
represents an investment of ap
proximately one-quarter of a mil
lion dollars over a period from
1050 to 1958. It is the largest sin
gle area of artificial reforestation
in the state of California today.
The Sugar Hill area had been
devastated by a series of four
large forest fires beginning in 1929.
The first plantations, No. 1 and
No. 2, were planted in the spring
of 1930, just south of Fandango
Creek, and the long job of reforest
ation was begun. Today these first
two plantations, now 28 years old.
nave trees over 40 eel in height
and over 16 inches in diameter.
From a blackened, devastated.
wasteland in the spring of 1930,
the area has once again been re
turned to a forested area all with
in the lifetime and memory of
many local Modoc residents who
worked at the planting of these
pine trees. To uninformed visitors
of the forest, the area seems
strange because "the-trees all
grow in rows."
