Hooker faces payment of $11,000
in back alimony that he did not
think he owed.
Hooker's ex-wife waived alimony
rights in 1947 when she moved
to California with a new husband.
But this year she filed suit to
recover 10 years of back payments,
at $20 a week. Her suit was de
nied in superior court but tho
State Supreme Court held she was
entitled to the money.
Under a Georgia law that stood
on the books until 1954, alimony
awarded for child support was a
permanent obligation, even if the
mother did not insist on it.

Ride is made every year by at least a part of the group
at lovely Paterson Lake. Horses are unsaddled and turned
out to graze on the green grass while the riders loaf over
saddlebag sandwiches, throw rocks into the lake to watch
the splash and fish. The man in the center of fhe picture
trying his luck at fishing is the same fellow on the cover.
The waters of the lake are cold enough to make it
dangerous to dip brass monkeys in them without damage.
Sports
Fishermen Have Good
i
Year Along Pacific Coast
In 1958, But Fears Looming
By DEVAN L. S1IUMWAY
United Press International
SACRAMENTO, (UPI) History
will record the years 1957 and 1958
as excellent for sports lishermen
along the Pacific Coast.
But is this good? Or is it bad?
To date nobody seems to have
definite answers to these puzzling
questions.
The reason for the good fishing
is readily apparent: The water's
warmer, thus attracting species
that haven't been captured in North
American waters before.
But the dilemma starts at this
point: It's a dilemma that is giv
ing scientists king-sized headaches
as well as giving sports fish
ermen along the Pacific Coast
some fish for their money.
The California Fish and Game
Department, in a monthly report,
said that high ocean temperatures
ofi the Pacific Coast arc not
unique by any means.
"However, the warm years of
1957-58 seem more exceptional in
normal temperatures which have
persisted since 1947," the slate
agency said.
"The warming in 1957-58 was
Pacific-wide phenomenon rather
than just a iocal one," it con
tinued. "Warming off the Pacific
Coast of the United States Is us
ually associated with cooling off
northern Japan and warm water
off northern Japan is generally
accompanied by cool water off our
coast.
When the water warms,' the ef
fect seems to be far-reaching.
"Tidal anomalies also seem to
be related to ocean tempera
tures," said the California report
"Higher than normal tides occur
when water temperatures are
higher and lower than normal tides
occur when the water is cool.
"In addition, the warming phe
nomenon has been associated with
an expansion and southward dis
placement of the semi-permanent
low pressure area located In the
north Pacific.
In other words, more rain in
California's coastal areas.
For others than the fishermen,
here were some of the results.
apparently, of the ocean's warming
up:
Hawaii had its first recorded
hurricane, the Peruvian coast was
afflicted with the fish-killing El
Nino, the ice went out at Point
Barrow at the earliest lime
history, and on the western edge
of the Pacific the tropical rainy
season lasted almost six weeks
beyond lis usual term.
uainornio s research agencies
are looking into the whole matter
and already a preliminary report
lor I9a7 has been published en
titled the California Cooperative
Oceanic fisheries Investigations.
There are some interesting facts
m that report:
The energy contained In half
the oil reserves on earth would be
required to produce the change ob
served last year in salt content
in the 200.000 square miles of the
California coast.
About four times more solar
heat than the area actually re
ceived would be needed to explain
ne cnangc that occurred.
The warming along the coast
averaged one degree centigrade
during 1957. Meanwhile, back in
the fish beds:
Sardine spawning during the pe
riod was unique because although
most of it took place in a coastal
band from Punta Baia to San Pe
dro, some spawned north of Point
Conception for the lirst lime in
several years.
At the same time, sardines were
widely scattered and not very abun
dant in 1957.
There was an "enormous in
crease in the percentage ot young
sardines (firecrackers) in the live-
bait catch, perhaps up to six per
cent compared with three-tenths of
one per cent in 1955, tne dcsi
previous year.
The year 1957, unquestionably
was the best sportsusning year
southern California ocean anglers
have enjoyed since party boat rec
ords were reestablished in 1947
after World War II.
Ycllowtai! have been caught off
all southern California sportsfish-
ing ports and in large numbers
south of Port Hucncme. The bar
racuda catch increased greatly
over the past several years. Boats
also got skipjack and dolphinfish
and occasionally landed yellowfin
tuna.
And the fish have been moving
further and further north.
For instance, white scabass were
caught off the Golden Gate near
San Francisco.
