By CHARLES MERCER
NEW YORK (AP) Not lone
ago, when Eou Hope was playing
stale lair, he mulled a punch
line and yelled, "I don't know
what I'm doing!" A local reporter
duly wrote in his paper that Bob
Hope said he didn't know what he
was doing.
Hope, laughing about it as he
hastened through New York the
other day, said he learned long
ago that you can die with a gag.
But Hope, a man with an endless
supply of gags, is as far from dy
ing as a comedian can be.
On Sept. 19. for example, he
launches his new television season
with the musical "Roberta
which was his first successful
Broadway show back in 1933

having a marital "misunderstand
ing" with Debbie but said it had
nothing to do with his breakfast
midnight dates with Miss Taylor
in New York.
"No. I'm not in love with Liz,'
Fisher said. "She's not in love
with me. The problem between
Debbie and me has nothing to do
with Elizabeth.
"We are all good friends."
Eddie and Debbie were both at
Iheir West Los Angeles home
where late Tuesday they scaled a
backyard fence to escape news
men and photographers and take
Miss Reynolds to a doctor be
cause of her "nerves."
Fisher's agent said the couple's
car stalled in the Westwood dis
trict when the battery died and
they were forced to get out and
push. They took a taxi home.
Both Usher and Miss lay lor
widow of producer Mike Todd, re
turned Tuesday from New York
where their breakfast, lunch and
dinner dates and appearances in
night spots produced speculation
of a budding romance.
The singer, who earlier tn the
week had kept Debbie waiting at
International Airport when he
didn't come home as scheduled,
went right home.
A few hours later the couple
issued a statement they were
having a "misunderstanding" but
added, "We have nothing more to
say."
Lovely Elizabeth had nothing
much to say to newsmen either
when she stepped off a Trans
World Airline plane Tuesday
night.
'I have nothing to say esieept
hello, she told reporters.
Asked why she did not go to
Europe from New Y'ork as
planned, she said:
1 was only going to oe gone
for a couple of weeks and I used
it up in New York. I am re
turning here to talk about a new
picture. I have no statement to
make about anything else."
And that was that. She was
whisked away in a private car,
apparently to her new home in
Bel Air.
Earlier in New Y'ork, she snap
ped at a newsman who asked her
if she were falling in love with
Eddie Fisher "that's a stupid
question. I'm not going to dignify
til with an answer."

Hold Hearings,
Group Requested
PORTLAND (AP) - The Legis
lative Interim Committee on
Mental Retardation has been
asked by State Rep. William A.
Grenfell (D-Portland) to hold
hearings on recent arson cases
involving retarded or emotionally
upset persons.
Two recent fires admitted set
by escapees from state mental
hospitals prompted Grenfell to i
make the request. He said the I
committee should consider;
whether remedial legislation is
needed to provide greater sei ur-
ity. measures for hospital inmres.
the live 90-minute production.
Those who know Otto Harbach's
nd Jerome Kern's "Roberta"
only as the source of such songs
as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"
and "The Touch of Your Hands"
should be reminded, in Hope's
words, that the musical play "is
lull of laughs."
Hope plays a bandleader named
Huckleberry Haines, an American
bandleader who goes to Paris and
becomes embroiled with girls,
gags and harrowing situations. In
the course of the show Hope docs
two monologues which is oae
more than he usually does on a
TV show, he points out.
"Roberta" is the first of eight
television shows he plans to do in
the forthcoming season. Three will!
be done on foreign soil one of
them, he plans, from Rio de
Janeiro, tie hopes to do one
domestic show based on the New
Orleans Mardi Gras. With the ex
ception of "Robert.." all the Hope
shows will be on film
present plans,
Hope seems to have fe& bet
ter at the hands of the critics than
any comedian with much tenure
on television. While agreeing that
is true, he says that "the kings
aren't in style these days." j
One reason for his continuing
popularity of television, he feels
is the fact that he hasn't been
overexposed. For another thing lie
under, always tries to work around the
talents of his guests and not retain
a rigid program formula.
