Mount Shasta, sawmills are stand

These pictures were taken In
1888, and Saturday, August 25, that
erstwhile young man observed his
90th birthday. He is George Blaik-
the last of the old bullwhackers
of the Mount Shasta logging era.
Blaikie is active, both mentally
and physically. He walks miles
each day, has a keen sense of
humor, and recalls episodes and
events with a vividness that sur
prises those who do not know him
well. He makes but one concession
to the years, and that is going to
bed early and sleeping late. He is
unmarried.
Bue he has a ready explanation
for this. He states that a clear
conscience' allows him to sleep.
The old ox teamster is a native
of Nova Scotia. He says that while
fishing is the prevailing activity
there, all the fishing he ever did
was in brooks. No deep sea tishing
for him. He said he could think like
an ox team, and control them, but

kled. If one questions his age be
cause of his activity, he states that

He likes stories with happy end
ings, and if they are on the racy
side, he can appreciate that, too.
But when one bemoans changes, he
flares. Monotony, he says, would
ruin everything if no changes oc
cur, for monotony is the worst
thing in this world.
Logging as he knew it, he says,
was trying to take all one could
get for as little as could be paid.
Timbering now is a science with
sustained yield taking the place of
ruthless cutting.
He longs for the sight of timber "but it must be slow. I may not
