f Sheriff Murray Britton will at
tend a one-day meeting of the
Oregon Sheriffs Association this
Friday in Vale, near the Idaho
border. Britton said proposed tax
collection laws would be discussed

make the trip with the sheriff.

Rickover might not be promoted
to vice admiral. Similar expres

in 1953 when his promotion then
was in doubt.
A storm also erupted recently
when Rickover was left out of a
White House ceremony honoring
the atomic submarine Nautilus'
triD under the North Pole. Gates
acknowledged Rickover had been
overlooked and accepted oiame.
Can Strike
Talks Begin
PORTLAND AP-An attempt
to settle the three-day strike of,
workers at the American Can Co.
plant here is under way.
A two-hour session between
management and representatives
of the United Steel Workers was
held Tuesday. Progress, if any,
was not announced. Spokesmen
indicated further sessions would
come today.
Union members walked out
Monday in protest of disciplinary
action taken by management
against two employes.
The big plant was idled. Some
900 persons were working there
at this peak season. In other sea
sons about 400 are employed.

man Leslie Simms always won
dered what would happen if he
pushed the afterburner button on
a jet. The afterburner is some
thing a pilot cuts in when he
needs more power.
Temptation got the best of
Simms yesterday.- He pushed the
button while taxiing an F100D
Super Sabre along a runway at
Nellis Air Force Base.
Whoosh went the jet down the
runway, through a fence and
across a highway where it ex
ploded and burned. Simms es
caped unhurt. The Air Force esti
mated the loss at a million dollars.
Simms reaction? He isn't avail
able for comment. He's under
strict guard pending investigation,
the Air Force said.
