War II Hero Fights Suit
OAKLAND. Calif. (UPI) A
war'hero who fought the Japanese
as a guerrilla in the Philippines
said today he will fight a govern
ment demand for $545 the cost
Of his transportation home.
"I don't want to appear belli
gerent," said John F, Linehan, 61,
I just know the charge is not
morally justified. I'm going to
fight this thing through."
- The government has ordered
linehan to pay up or to face a
lawsuit. The $545 represents the
Cost of transporting Linehan home
from Australia, where he was tak
en after a submarine evacuated
him from the Philippines.

han signed a promissory note and
that officials in Washington have
ordered him to take legal action,
if necessary, to collect it.
Linehan earns $4,300 a year as
a civil service worker at the Oak
land Army Terminal. He com
mutes on weekends to be with
Ks family in Santa Rosa, Calif.
He said payment of the claim
"will be an awful hardship."
Linehan contracted beri beri
acute enteritis and malaria during
his guerrilla days. In October,
11154, a U. S. Navy submarine
evacuated him to Australia.
While there he gave the U. S.
Army much information which he
said was valuable in planning the
reinvasion of the Philippines.

LONDON (AP) The Soviet
army newspaper Red Star
charged today that the United
States sent the atomic submarine
Nautilus under the arctic ice as
part of its war preparations
against the Soviet Union.
In an article broadcast by Mos
cow radio, Red Star referred to
"the big propaganda hullabaloo
set up by the U.S. press in its
attempts to depict the trip of the
Nautilus of America's answer to
the satellite."
The paper questioned official
American statements that the aim
of the transpolar voyage was to
open up a new sea route for nuclear-powered
freight submarines
between the world's two main
oceans.
No, the U.S.A. was not inter
ested in scientific problems or a
peaceful study of the arctic," Red
Star declared. "Nuclear-powered,
rocket . armed submarines are
meant for war against the
U.S.S.R."
