Card Runner Trips,
SF Giants Win Again
SAN FRANCISCO (API - The
San Francisco Giants loved that
trip from the Moon.
It won them a ball game Thurs
day from St. Louis 4-3.
And it gave them another zany
way to beat the Cardinals.
Cardinals Manacer Fred Hutch
inson figured the Giants had
exhausted their bag of tricks
when they beat him July 5 and
6 by flukes. Pitcher Larry Jack
son walked in the walked run
on July 5 and hit a batter to force
in the winnig run the next day.
But the latest happened this
way:
The bases were loaded and the
Giants led 4-2 in the ninth when
Curt Flood singled off reliever
Fishing
Great
Yesterday
KETCHIKAN, Alaska (UPU -
like the man always says: "You
" should have been here last week."
Or last month or last year.
The fish always seem to be bit
ing better when I'm not around.
"This is kinda disgusting," said
Jim Glane, a part-time fisherman.
"I been out on that water all
day and all 1 caught was S3
pounds. Last year sometimes I
come in with as much as 500
oounds.
"Of course, this year we are
getting 61 cents a pound for these
king salmon. And last year it was
only 42 cents.
PROFITABLE HOBBY
"Luckily, I don't have to depend
upon fishing for a livelihood. I
work for a cannery and have a
regular salary guarding fish
traps. I just do this fishing in my
spare time." (hmmm. Let's see
now: S3 pounds at 61 cents a
pound in your spare time is a fair
hobby .
Fishermen here say that the
best part of the fishing season is
over for the year.
"You should have been here in
June." said a sports boat oper
ator "That's when they really
were biting."
Glane gets his fish any way he
can trolling, mooching or "I'll
grab them with my h3nds if I
get a chance.
DON'T CATCH
Ketchikan Creek ruhs right
through the center of this thriving
fishing village and there visitors
sland on the bridge and watch
hundreds of 20-pound salmon play
in the waters. But, while it looks
like a fishermen's paradise no
fishing" signs are posted.
.. "These salmon are just stalling
around waiting for more fresh
water in Xhe stream before head
ing up to spawn," said the fish
erman. "We've had our driest
summer in history and the creeks
are low. The fish are waiting for
the water to become cooler, then
they know it will be safe to go
up stream."
. Slightly fed up with the subject
of fishing. Galen offered:
1 "Oh, well. The deer hunting
season opens Aug. 20. We "are al--lowed
three bucks. And I guess
.1 11 be doing that for a while. It
will be a change from fishing."

Marv Grissom. It was a deep
shot to left and Gene Green
scored easily.
Wally Moon rounded third, then
tripped and fell. He just did get
back to the base. Gene Freese
popped out to end the game.
Moon said he slipped on the
grass, his feet just went out from
unaer mm.
Third base coach Stan Hack
declared there wasn't a chance of
left-fielder Feline Alou throwine
out Moon, who would have scored
the tying run had he kept his
leer.
Hutchinson had nothina to sav.
He couldn't even be found after
the game.
Willie Mays and Darvl Spencer
leo tne Giant attack on Bi!
Muffett with home runs. Willie's
was his second in two days and
his 19th of the season. Spencer's
was his 13th and came before a
heals Stadium crowd of 14,837.
Muffett pitched hitless ball until
the fifth when Willie Kirkland
singled. 1 He gave up the first
Giant run in the sixth when he
hit Jim Davenport and gave up
singles to Mays and Hank Sauer.
Stan Musial failed to get a hit
in the three-game series which
the Giants won 2-1. Musial went
0 for 10.
the two big runs came in
the eighth when Mays homered
Sauer walked and Orlando Cepeda
doubled home pinch runner Felipe
AIOU.
Cepeda, 20-year-old rookie sen
sation, incidentally, received a
reported $3,000 raise for his tre
mendous year. He leads the club
in homers, 21, and runs batted in,
70.
Johnny Antonelli gave up seven
hits but didn t quite last tne dis
tance. Grissom relieved him with
two outs and the bases loaded.
Flood greeted old Marv with a
single, then came Moon's trip.
The Chicago Cubs come to town
tonight for the first of a three
game set. Slowballcr Stu Miller
3-6 will face Cub Dave Hillman
2-4. Miller is 2-0 against Chicago
and Hillman is 0-0 against the
Giants.
