Yreka Woman Victorious
At Siskiyou Art Exhibit
YREKA A big day dawned
last week for Mrs. May 0. Stevens
of Yreka whose painting of an
"Irish Colleen" won the popular
ity vote at the first annual art
exhibit in June by the Siskiyou
Artists Association. Mrs. Stevens is
now eligible for a special prize
presentation by the international
art supplies firm of M. Grumbach
er. Inc., New York.
The special award arrived last
week from New York and is now
on display in the window of Jan
son's Stationery. Yreka, along with
the prize winning portrait.
. With the prize, which consists of
a completely fitted artist's chest,
Mrs. Stevens also received a hand
somely engraved award of merit
for outstanding contribution to the
arts.
Mrs. Stevens started painting
when a very young child, but at
the age of 15, when her father
died, she had to give it up to
help care for her younger broth
ers and sisters. So. instead of be
coming the great artist of her girl
hood dreams, Mrs. Stevens carried
on a career as a dress designer
in Portland, and also taught dress
making for many years.
Mrs. Stevens was married ir
1913 in Portland to George Stevens
and in 1919 the couple moved to
Siskiyou County, establishing their
home on a ranch near Grenada.
It was in 1935 that Mrs. Stevens re
sumed painting, and since that
time has not only painted many
fine portraits, including a self por-

the Weyerhaeuser timber Co. put
up its first signs inviting the pub-'

Toutle River in Southwest Wash

It quickly showed its merit. It
kept picnickers from scattering
litter and creating fire hazards at
unguarded spots.
Today the Weyerhaeuser com
pany is firmly in the park busi
ness. It has a string of 23 in its
lorests.

ing, Mrs. Stevens also does some
clay modeling and sculpture work.

sion a violin, which she construct
ed herself and which she plays.
The violin body is made of the
wood from an old Brunswick phon
ograph, and, of particular interest,
the fact that the side pieces
are composed of 27 tiny pieces of
wood, meticulously fitted together.
She stated that "I am almost as
proud of this violin as I am of
my 'Irish Colleen,' " which, by
the way, is actually a portrait of
ner 4-year-old niece.

Macmillan came home today from
what he called encouraging talks
in Athens) Ankara and Nicosia on
the future of strife-torn Cyprus.
Macmillan told a news confer
ence in Nicosia before flying to
London that the main job now is
to end violence which has taken
hundreds of lives on the British
'.Mediterranean island.
He said he could not tell what
the next step would be but would
discuss the problem with his Cabinet.
He met in Nicosia with leaders
of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot
communities that are seeking op
posing futures for the crown col
ony. Macmillan told newsmen his
five days of talks had left him
encouraged rather than discour
aged. Their purpose was not to
try to reach definite agreements
but to discuss the problem, he
said.

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Police
records disclosed today that Mick
ey Rooney's 21-year-old, blonde
girlfriend was hospitalized after
gulping pills at the actor's home
The story involving the four-times-married
Rooney and star
let Barbara Thomalson, chosen
Miss Muscle Beach of 1954, be
came public Monday several days
after the incident.
According to police, blue-eyed
Miss Thomalson, known profes
sionally as Caroline Mitchell,
swallowed the pills last Thursday
night at Rooney's home in North
Hollywood. Rooney was not home.
The actress, dunked nude into
a swimming pool by a roommate
and fed black coffee before a
Fire Department rescue unit was
called, denied she had tried to kill
herself. She said she took the pills
for a virus condition.
Turkey vultures 'are now some
times seen in western Massachu
setts, where they were not seen
15 years ago. The National Geo
graphic Society says it is due to
changes in wealher conditions.
