Need'more table space in kitch
en, garage or workshop? Tables
that fold flat against the wall
when not in 'use are easy to make
with two brackets, a piece of
inch plywood, and a small amount
of laminate or thin ceramic tile
with trim. Brackets are available
at hardware stores, mail order
houses and building material deal
ers. The plywood, laminate, tile
and trim are available at lum
ber yards.
Picture 1 shows a typical fold
ing table. It can be as large or
as small as desired, and fits tight
ly against the wall when not in
use, as shown in picture 2.
For workshop or laundry use,
plain or painted plywood will serve.
Decide the size and ask a lumber
yard to cut a piece of -inch
plywood. The edges can be sand
papered, or rub on wood glue at
the end cuts. When dry sandinc
will give a good appearance. The
brackets can be fastened to t h e
wall with rawl-plugs for masonry
or screws for frame walls, as ex
plained in the directions that
come with the brackets. In frame
walls be sure that the brackets are
located so 214 inch flat-head wood
screws enter the studs in the walls.
The plywood can be finished
with a laminate such as Pionite
or thin ceramic tile in kitchens
or other areas.
Laminate Finish. (See picture
3.) Purchase a piece of laminate
to cover the plywood, the adhes
ive and enough metal trim to go
around the plywood. Use a saw and
a wood file to round off the corn
ers of the plywood. Make sure the
laminate is cut to exact size, and
saw from the face side using a
crosscut saw. Brush two coats of
adhesive on the plywood and one
coat on the back of the laminate,
Let it dry for about 30 minutes
or until adhesive is not tacky,
Carefully place laminate on the
plywood. The bond will take place
instantly. Roll the laminate with
a rolling pin or pound with a
block of wood and hammer. At
tach the metal trim which can be
bent . to a two inch radius.
Thin Ceramic Tile Finish. To
avoid cutting tile pieces, plan
the table size so that all full
pieces of tile can be used. Use
MGth-inch joints between pieces
of tile. Buy enough trim so it laps
over the top of the plywood on all
sides. No joint between tile and
trim is necessary. For example, for
a table about 27 inches wide, if
the trim laps A inch, six rows
of tile are needed, bee picture 4.
Install the wood trim first and
enamel it. Then apply the tile ad
hesive to the plywood. Wait 30
minutes. Apply the tile by pressing
them into position on the adhesive,
If the tile has lips on edges the
joints will automatically be spaced
correctly, if lips are not present
use small pieces of cardboard to
make alt joints equal. Remove
the cardboard alter 24 hours. In
another 12 hours, mix the grout,
which comes with the tile, with
water to the consistency of thick
cream. Moisten the joints with a
sponge. Apply the grout to the
joints with a rubber spatula. Run
a finger along the jouits to firm
the grout and to make all joints
appear equal in width. Then re
move excess grout with a sponge.

A. On all soft or close-grained
woods use a coat of gray stain.
When the stain is dry, rub the
surface of the wood with a soft
rag and a small amount of white
paint.
