Other Mideast Hotspots Hay Fan Current Flames

The Middle East is studded
With hotspots that could inflame
the present crisis.
Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, of
course, are the chief danger
points.
But there are sensitive situa
tions in such seldom-mentioned
places as Kuwait, Yemen, Libya
and the Sudan.
In addition, there is great ten
sion along the frontier between
Turkey on one side and Syria
and Iraq on the other.
Great Britain has been alarmed
by the disclosure that Sheikh Ab
dullah As-Salim As-Sabah, ruler,
of its little protectorate o( Ku
wait, has conferred Iwice with
I President Gamal Abdel Nasser of
the United Arab Republic.
Kuwait, on the Persian Gulf, is
I the greatest nil producing center
I in the whole Middle hast, and one
of the greatest in the world.
I It has long been known there
is a strong pro-Nasser element in
Kuwait, and as a precaution Brit
ain is reinforcing its troops in the
neighboring sheikhdom on Ban

Kuwait's oil is vitally important
to Britain. A British commentator
discussing a possible blow - up
there, has said Kuwait is more
important to Britain economically
than Gibraltar, Malta and Cyprus
put together.

To Await Last Son's Burial
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (API -
Grief-stricken Sen. John McClcl
lan came home to Arkansas to
day to await the burial of his
youngest son, victim of a plane
crash that also killed three other
men.
McClellen made anolhcr sorrow
ful journey from Washington nine
years ago. He came then (or the
rebunal of a soldier son who died
overseas and his second son died
of auto wreck injuries on the day
of the funeral.
James Howard McClcllan, 3D,
who was killed in the crash near
Little Rock yesterday, was the
62-year-old senator's third and on
i ly remaining son.
The Arkansas Democrat re
ceived the news of the fatal crash
just after he had been in the Sen
ate chamber voting on an amend
ment to the Reciprocal Trade Act

Powell Must
Stand Trial
NEW YORK lAPl-A federal
judge has ruled that Pep. Adam
Clayton Powell Jr. DNY must
stand trial for alleged income tax
evasion.
Judge William B. Hcrlands
ruled yesterday that the indict
ment charging Powell is valid.
The Negro congressman had
sought to have the indictment
thrown out. He claimed the grand
jury voted it as the result ol al
leged improper actions by former
Asst. U. S. Atly. Thomas A. Bolan
and a magazine editor.
Bolan presented much of the
original evidence lo the grand i
jury. He resigned during a 14
month period in which the jury did
not act on the case.
Powell asserted that Bolan sup
plied the editor, William F. Buck
ley Jr. of the National Review,
with inflammalory inlonnalion on
which the magazine based articles
on the case.

mailed to jurors. Subsequently,
the jury voted the indiclment.
Powell is charged with prepar
ing a false 10.il income tax re
turn for his wife, pianist Hazel
Scott, a Negro, end with evading
approximately $3,000 In a joint re
turn tor 1S2. no charge was
made against the wife.

James McClellan's law partners,

Yemen has been attacking
Britain's protectorate of Aden
sporadically for several years and
openly hopes to take it over.
Its allegation of British troop
movements might be a build up
lor new raids across the Yemen
frontier at this time.
It was made known during the
week end that Kritain has rein
forced its troops in Libya, ad
joining hgypt on the west.

Egyptian agents have been stir
ring up trouble in Libya ever
since Nasser seized power in an
attempt to undermine King Idris.
Britain started reinforcing its
;roops when it received intelli
gence reports of a plot lo over
throw Idris.
Relations are had also between
figypt and the Sudan, adjoining
it on Ihe south. Nasser has tried
vainly lo lure the Sudan into his
orbit. On Saturday, the Sudanese
government expelled the counsel
or of the Lgyptain embassy in
Khartoum, the capital, on the
ground he had started effecting
contact with subversive elements
as soon as he arrived here four
days previously.
In addition to these situations
Syria has sent strong military
forces to the Lebanese frontier in
an obvious attempt to encourage
the rebels there.
And Turkey has put its forces
on the alert along its frontiers
