Rartzen, who won the singles
title in 1054, picked up another hy
showing Sain Giammalva he
should never change his style to
that of his opponent when his op
ponent has been using the style
successfully on clay courts for a
couple decades.
The 23-year-old Houston slugger
took the first set n3 hy charging
the net and overpowering Rartzen.
Giammalva then hegan spend
ing more and more lime at the
baseline. Rut he learned that few
men in the nation can outvolley
Bartzen on clay.
Perfectly intermixing drop shots
and sideline placements, the sec
ond-seeded Texan won the next
three sets 7-3, B-2, 62.
Giammalva teamed with Barry
MacKay of Dayton. Ohio, top
seeded singles player who was
beaten by Sammy in the quarter'
finals, to whip Rartzen and Chi
cago's Grant Golden for the dou
bles title fi-2, fi-4, 5-7, 3-fl. 6-0.

He went into the fourth round

on the second hole, caught him at

tough front nine with a 31 best
score of the tournament.
He picked up four strokes
cainst both Snead and Casper on
that nine.
Casper par rod the short 12th
hole and Finsterwald's tec shot
landed in tall, clinging rough. He
played a beautiful shot out and
got a par 3 while Snead three
nutted for a four.
On the next hole Snead missed
two short pulls alter a shot from
