Lovers Back
To Face Fate
SOUTHAMPTON. England AP
Dominic Klwes and Tessa Ken
nedy, who defied English law to
run away and get married, came
back voluntarily to Britain today
to face the music.
There has been a high court or
der out to commit the 26-year-old
Klwes to prison since he eloped
to Scotland with the lft-ycar-old
shipping heiress last December
against her parents wishes.
Elwes left the French liner Lib
erte with his attorney in a private
launch and came ashore pale and
unsmiling. He refused to speak to
reporters.
. lessa, weeping openly, came
ashore an hour later with other
passengers. She was accompanied
by Elwes' father, portrait painter
Simon Elwes who lives in New-York.
It was the first time the couple
had been separated since the
elopement.
Elwes was believed to have left
for London later by car. He was
given special immigration and
customs clearance aboard the
liner.
Tessa's parents had had her
made an infant ward of the high
ccurt to block the match. The
law caught up with the runaways
in Scotland and a Scottish court
also forbade them to marry. They
went to Luna and were wed in a
civil ceremony in January, later
going through another ceremony
before a Supreme Court judge in
New York.
Two weeks ago the couple's at
torneys announced they were com
ing back to Britain "to submit to
the jurisdiction of a British
court." Other passengers aboard
the l.iherte said they looked very
happy on the crossing and spent
most of the evenings dancing.

Iraqi resistance to the rebels
would rally around the 70-year-old
soldier-statesman, the dominant
force in his country for years and
one of the West's best friends in
the Middle East.
In New York, the United States
called the U.N. Security Council
into emergency session today to
seek a check to the new turbu
lence in the Middle East. Both
the U.S. and British governments
alerted forces for possible inter
vention in the area, but the Ei
senhower administration was hop
ing the U.N. could successfully
bolster the forces opposed to the
spread of Nassensm.
However, the threat of the So
viet veto made any decisive U. N.
action unlikely. Pro - Western
sources in Beirut said failure of
the West to intervene to protect
Jordan and Lebanon would mean
the end of Western influence in
the .Middle East.
The rebel-held Baehdad radio
claimed that the situation in Iraq
has finally been stabilized and the
British-trained Iraqi army of 60.-
000 had rallied to the new repub
lic neaflea by Brig. Gen. Abdel
Karim Kassem as premier.
Hours later came the announce
ment of Nuri's escape, with no
word on how he did it. But it ap
peared unlikely a man of his age
could have gotten away without
help, and this roused hope in Lon
don tnat resistance forces were
gathering. The commander of the
rebel forces offered a reward of
10,000 dinars $28,000 for his cap
ture.
Some diplomats experienced in
the Middle East cautioned that the
escape announcement might be a
ruse. They said the rebels might
he rying to absolve themselves
of any responsibility for his death
by laying the groundwork for an
announcement that Nuri had been
shot during the manhunt.
Nuri was first reported killed
by mobs which hanged Crown
Prince Abdul Ilah. the uncle and
chief palace adviser of voung
King Feisal II and a leading Brit
ish ally. The Baghdad mob also
sacked and burned the British
Embassy, symbol of Britain's lone
dominance of the country.
By CAY PAULEY
I PI Women's Editor
NEW YORK lUPI) Will we
women climb out of our chemises
ind trapezes come fall? Will we
iust the sack and get our waist
lines back? What goes with hem
lines and knees, necklines and
bosoms?
Well, if you're just bursting
with curiosity, relax and read.
The answers to these questions
and many more concerning fall
styles are on the way, given you
by the news services and by wom
en s or fashion editors of your
newspaper.
All will be in New York, the
nation's fashion center, next week
to report the news in the never
dull, frequently jittery world of
style.
The editors will see collections
of the 30 designer-manufacturer
members of the couture group, of
the New York Dress Institute.
showing coats, suits, dresses and
evening wear. Fifteen other shows
by auxiliary and associate mem
bers will include children's wear,
furs, hats, shoes and other acces
sories, cosmetics and hair styles
Predictions of what s to come
already abound. The fashion
group, representing designers,
stylists, retailers and others ir
the field, predicted at a preview
recently that the sack is dead
that this fall the accent will be on
bosoms and legs. Hemlines are
going up. said the group.
Women's Wear, the trade pub
lication, predicted continuation of
a "fluid" or loosened silhouette at
the natural waistline, but revival
of the empire bodice. This is the
shape which definitely accents the
bosom, through ribbon, seaming,
or bands directly beneath the
bust.
And, some reporters alreadv
have scouted the New York mar
ket, the nation's clothing center,
to report their findings.
But the greatest single turnout
of news gals begins Sunday, when
200 of them swarm in from the
United States and Canada. The
couture group showings have been
a semi-annual event since . July.
1943, and seven sturdy reporters
naven t missed a single season.
This year, some of the desien
ers whose names are familiar to
the woman who follows fashion
closely will be missing. Claire
McCardell, best known for her
leadership in casual and comfort
able clothes, died last spring
Aurice Rentner, generally consid
ered the dean of American de
signers, died this week. But their
firms go on.
Nettie Rosenstein, who made
many of Mrs. Mamie Eisenhow
er s formal gowns including those
for the inaugurals, isn't showing
a fall collection. But a spokesman
for the institute said she probably
would be back in business by
spring.
Ike's Kin

PANAMA (AP)-Dr. Milton Ei
senhower planned to talk about
better inter-American relations to
day on a deep sea fishing trip
with Panama s President Ernesto
de la Guardia Jr.
President Eisenhower's brother
said he would discuss economic
aid with De La Guardia. includ
ing long - and short-term credits
to Panama which Milton might
recommend when he gets home.
The fishing party was to last
overnight, with Eisenhower land
ing tomorrow morning to fly to
Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the next
stop on his fact-finding central
American tour as a special U. S.
ambassador.
Eisenhower's fishing trip left be
hind some unhappy university stu
dents. They asked to meet on
their campus with the visitor, who
is president of Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, but he
suggested the U. S. Embassy.
The students, who openly oppose
De La Guardia and want a great

fused to enter the embassy, and
about 65 of them picketed it for
nearly an hour yesterday while
Eisenhower himself was away
touring the canal zone.
ou're worth IVi million dollars,
s that true?
A. I don't know what I'm worth,
never see the money.
Q. Where is it?
A. In the bank. I get it when
I'm 21.
Q. What are you going to do
vith it?
A. Spend it.
Q. What do you live on now?
A. My folks give me money
.vhen 1 ask for it. I don't need
nuch about $10 a week.
Q. Are your personal appear
ances dangerous?
A. They can be. I lose some of
my clothing now and then. I gen
erally take along two ex-UCLA
football players, Paul Cameron
and Jack Elena, to protect me.
I spend most of my time in each
town in the hotel room. It's too
much of a problem to go out.
Q. If they're so rugged, why do
you go on those tours?
A. I like to sing.
Q. Did you ever take any les
sons? A. No. I used to sing in a church
choir. And I was a big fan of
classical music when I was about
6.
Q. Are you going to college?
A. Not this year. I'll be too busy
making another picture, the TV
series, recording and doing per
sonals. If I took four years of
college, then went into the Army
for two years, that would be too
much time lost.
Q. What is your draft status?
A. I'm registered. I suppose I'll
have, until I'm 22 before I go in.
Q. Your father once told me
you and David could cut out from
the TV show any time you wanted.
Have you ever thought of it?
A. No. It's a good thing to have.
I wouldn't want my own show.
