CAPTAIN GLENN A. STOVER, son of Mrs. L. K. Wade, 1038 Pacific Terrace, was The
commander of the Crew of the Monfh selected by the 310th Air Refueling Squadron,
Schilling Air Force Base, Kansas. Capt. Stover, a command pilot, has been in the Air
Force for 12 years, and has been with the squadron for two years. The selection was
based on the crew's spirit of cooperation, outstanding achievements and professional
ability, as demonstrated during the month of May. Stover is to the left in the above pic
ture of the crew.

lo repair a slide in the Dunsmuir
High School athletic field. Material
sloughed off in the slide, fell across
the adjacent freeway right of way
owned by the state.
The slide, caused by last winter's
heavy rains, is now being repaired
by Herman DeBoer, Castella con
tractor, under an $8.Hf).i contract
with the Dunsmuir High School
Board.
tThe state has asked that this
work cease.
The school board has already ap
plied for federal disaster relief
funds. Letters will he sent asking
that any grant be held in abeyance
while the Siskiyou County district
attorney decides whether the letter
from the state is a binding agree
merit.
DeBoer has completed about 5(1
per cent of the work but said at
the meeting Wednesday night that
he was willing to cooperate with
the school board if it requested to
be released from the contract.

Planning To Enter College
QUINCY, 111. (AP)-It's hard to
believe lhat nine years ago Joseph
Anthony was a ragged, dirty
hungry boy of the streets in Seoul,
Korea.
Today, at Id, he's a pleasant,
rcholarly young man, preparing to
take his oath nt U.S. citizenship
and to enter Quincy College in
the fall.
"Oh. I'd have become a full
fledged citJ7.cn long ago," he sajd.
"But the law requires that an
immigrant reside in this wonder
ful country five years before he
may be naturalized and that is
wise.

American soldiers and fell in love

His American dream began
with kindness of an Army ser
geant who fed him, and was nur
tured by the good will he found

lated his name Irnm Shu to Joe,
or, more often. Little Joe.

him to Japan, where a chaplain.
the Rev. Donald Werr, took charge
of his fortunes. Falher Werr, now
assistant to the president of Quin
cy College, gave Joe his last name
in honor of St. Anthony, patron
of Inst objects. He prepared Joe
for coming to the United Slates,
and hundreds of servicemen
helped.

Big Game Political Hunt
Goes Back Some 25 Years
WASHINGTON (UPI) To
match Ihe big game political
hunt in which presidential assistant
Sherman Adams is the unhappy
quarry, it is necessary to go hack
nearly 25 years to the era of the
Kingfish, the late Sen. Huey Pierce
Long.
The year was 1M5 and the man
for whom the Kingfish went hunt
ing was James A. Farley, chair
man of the Democratic National
Committee and postmaster gener
al in Franklin D. Roosevelt s cab
inet. The similarily between the Ad
ams and Farley hunts is limited
strictly lo the fact that each of
ihe hunled was so big in the ad
ministration in which he served
that disgrace might well ruin a
President and disrupt a party.
The ruin of FDR and suffoca
tion of Ihe New Deal parly, then
a-horning, was precisely what
Huey had in mind, lie was plan
ning soon lo run for President
himself, and needed to cut FDR
and the New Deal down to size
cpiration of his campaign was in
much simpler language. Alter his
baseless charges had been refuted
and rejected by the Senate, Long
remarked:
"Jim was the biggest rooster in
Ihe yard and I thought if I could
break his legs, the rest would be
easy.
Easy it might have been, loo,
in those days ofi' bleak depression
for Long lo have parlayed his
every - man a - king share the-
wealth ballyhoo into a pnsitinnn for
himself of great political power. He
already possessed millions of fol
lowers including much of Ihe luna
tic fringe.
The Kinefish's strategy failed he

the charges and a written response
by Farley lo every question Long
had raised.
But, if Long's strategy failed
his political thinking was pvetty
good. If he had brought rarley
down on charges of corruption, or
even of gross imprudence, much of
the prestige of the Roosevelt ad
ministration and of the President
himself might well have gone down
with the postmaster general and
party chairman. Farley was, no
doubt of it, the biggest rooster in
Ihe yard, excepting only FDR him
self.
There is no doubt, eilhe , that
Adams is the biggest rooster in
the Eisenhower administration
next, of course, to DDF.. If Far
ley's disgrace would have shorn
FDR and his administration of its
prestige, so Adams' disgrace
would shear the Eisenhower ad
ministration. The necessities of politics vary,
of course,-with time and the cast
of characters. Nothing short of
driving Farley from Ihe cabinet as
unfit would have served Long's
self-serving purpose. Long was a
Democrat crusading against an
other Democrat and he needed an
official "kill" to score at all.
It is a Democratic committee
of a Democratic House of Repre
sentatives which harasses Adams.
The Democratic majority need not
be committed to driving Adams
from his White House office. With
a campaign coming up, presiden
tial assistant Adams in Ihe While
House could be more valuable to
the Democrats than private citi
zen Adams way up there in New
Hampshire.
Anyway, that is the way a lot
of Republicans figure it, especial
ly those who will be appealing this
year for votes.
