HOLLYWOOD (AP) The box

and Howard Hawki may be (he

Although cinerama started the,
big-screen revolution five years
ago, film makers have yet to put
story film on the big, semi
circular screen. The three-camera
process has been used merely to
present glorified travelogues, with
ihe result that interest has di
minished with each new presenta
(ion. .
Even cinemiracle. which made
improvements on the three-image
process, came forward with a
travelogue for its first film.
"Windjammer." The lack of a
strong story disappointed many
reviewers.
Now Hawks and Wayne have
the idea of presenting a story in

Theater sank quietly in the Sun
day channels of daytime television
;u June's end, torpedoed by big
expenses and small audiences.
Somehow, it had managed to
survive almost three years
spite of competition, from quiz
shows, musical shows and serials
It won wide critical acclaim, but
lor some time it has been unloved

sponsors' eagerness to help pay
for the plays even when they
were Shakespeare.
In Matinee Theater's place have
come two serials cast in the con
ventional mold of agony and much
cheaper to produce.
Meanwhile, however, Matinee
Theater is not beyond salvage. It
has developed a hard core of such
devoted viewers that Mrs. John
Conte, wife of the actor who was
host on the show, was moved to
organize the non-profit Foundation
for the Preservation of Matinee
Theater. To dale, thousands of
viewers have contributed more

Whether or not the foundation
successful, the idea of thou

gent, entertaining television show
is stimulating and pleasant.

Wayne, Hawks Speed For First Wide, Wide Picture

"Red Hiver," and are now mak
ing "Rio Bravo."
"I think the time is ripe for
putting a story on that big
screen," producer-director Hawks
said. "Wayne and 1 bave a story
.which I think would work a
kind of Western.
I "It won't be easy. You've got
I to have a very special kind of
story for the big screen, one
jlhat gives you a variety of back
grounds. 'Red River would have
been ideal, because it concerned
a long cattle drive.
" The Searchers,' which Wayne
did with John Ford, would also
have been good if they had car
ried the search through a lot of
different Western backgrounds."
Hawks is being independent
about his plans. He favors "the
cinemiracle process, but declines
to discuss the script with its back
ers. "If we want to use your proc
ess, we'll use it," he told them
bluntly. "
Hawks has been missing from
the Hollywood scene since mak
ing "Land of the Pharoahs." It
was a near-miss and sourea
Hawks on the movie business, j
"I thought I would quit, and
I did for a while," said the direc
tor of "Scarface," "Bringing Dp
Baby," "To Have and Have Not,"
"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and
other hits.
"But then I got bored and de
cided I might as well be doing
what I know best."
