Roast Corn On Cob
Fresh corn on the cob is es
pccially flavorful when roasted in
toil, either on an outdoor grill or
in a preheated 425 degree oven.
Husk corn, remove silks, nnd
place each ear or. a square of
aluminum foil. Sprinkle with salt
and pepper, top with a thin slice
of butter or margarine, and wrap
securely by making a double
lengthwise fold on top of the ear.

popularity of wood in modern
homes is its versatility. On the

the desirable color and textures

ishability" of the woods of the
western pine region have helped
to popularize them in contempor
ary settings. Because they are
economical soft woods, they are
well suited for builtins designed to
use the available wall space to the
best advantage in modern houses
and apartments where space is at
a premium. Because they lend
themselves to any finishing treat
ment, they blend well with any
materials that are employed in
modern settings.
In a small bedroom, built ins can
be constructed to utilize the space
along an entire wall much more
efficiently than any standard fur
niture pieces.
Drawer, cabinet, closet and
shelf space may be provided just
where it is needed. A series of
drawer units may run along one
wall and connect with shelves that
run to the bed, providing a conven
ient substitute for night tables.
When it comes to exercising in
dividual expression, the 10 species
of the western pine region offer
almost unlimited choices. The
range includes stock with big.
splashy knots or small, neat knots
numerous or widely scattered
or with no knots.
Ponderosa pine, Idaho white
pine, and sugar pine are among
the most popular species and are
widely available in lumber yards
But some of the lesser known spe
cies may offer a good buy and
provide just the effect that
sought. For instance, lodgepole
pine has tight, widely-spaced knots
that may be well suited to a con
temporary setting.

Wood Darkener
All wood darkens with age. This
natural "sun tannine" produces
the rich patina that has made
wood paneled walls a cenluries-
old favorite in American homes.
It is possible to reproduce the
weathered effect of age with rea
sonable accuracy in finishing wood
paneling. However, says the West
ern Pine Association, it should also
be kept in mind that the "sun
tanning" process will occur re
gardless of the original finish.
in deciding on a finish, think
about the tone that is wanted
eventually. Then apply stain that
will be several shades lighter to
begin with. Age will moke up the
difference, says the Western Pine
Association.
The same principle applies if
wood is given a natural finish. In
that case, the natural tone of the
selected species must be consid
ered.
Exposure of wood lo light pro
duces slow oxidation of the sur
face fibers, causing a permanent
chemical change in the color of
the wood s surface.
Nutrition Is Means
Of Insect Control
Nutrition as a means of insect
control, that's the possibility seen
in recent LSDA experiments.
Department scientists have found
that spider mites attacking pole
lima beans were easy to kill when
the beans were supplied with prop
er amounts of nitrogen, phosphor
ous and potassium.
And they also found that mites
were harder to kill on plants re
ceiving less or more of the proper
nourishment. They now suspect
that resistance to insecticides, so
often found in insects, may ac
tually be the result of variations in
plant nutrient levels.

acteristic grain and knot pattern
of the wood to show through. There
are numerous ready-mixed com
mercial stains and pigments on the
market or a little experimentation
in do-it-yourself mixing will yield
the desired effect.
