A Tale of Two Squirrels. While picnicking in Yosemite National Park,
two of its little residents taught us a moral.
Our picnic lunch was spread on the grass, and soon we noticed two
beady-eyed squirrels peeking at us. We tossed a crumb toward them.
Startled, they retreated behind a tree.
One ventured out, however, and snatched
it. So we tossed more crumbs and they be
came bolder. We noticed a difference be
tween them. One was chubby, the other
long and lean. Fatty was getting all the
crumbs; sometimes he'd almost eat them
out of our hands. Skinny, however, would
come only so far, then panic and run back.
"Just like people." Dad said. "Those
with courage enough to go after things
usually get them. Those afraid to risk any
thing do without Both squirrels have the
same opportunity, but one is too fright
ened to take advantage of it." Kay Stacy,
Ogden, Utah.
Perils of the Party Hue. When I was manager of a small-town tele
phone company, I frequently handled complaints of party-line custom
ers. One day a woman with a reputation for long-windedness called
to complain about another woman on her line who, she said, listened
in on all her conversations.
After she had talked for nearly 30 minutes, assuring me several
times that she never talked long on the phone, another voice was
heard. It said, "I'm the other woman, and Mrs. is a liar. I never
listen on the line. She's using it all the time. Why she's talked more
than half an hour now. I know, because I timed her." W. B., Grand
Rapids, Mich.
eevolet lureaecracy. Until
recently I believed that all
Government officials were
so devoted to the letter of
the law that they had no
compassion for the indi
vidual. Now I know better.
My husband was killed in
an accident when our chil
dren were 2 and 4, and since
then we've received month
ly benefits under the sur
vivors' provisions of Social
Security. Through a mistake
of my own, I recently ac
cepted an overpayment.
Then, after an investiga
tion of my financial status, I received this formal letter from the
Social Security Administration:
". . . with reference to the incorrect payment in the amount of
$67.33 which you received ... it has been determined that it will not
be necessary for you to refund it . . ." Mrs. M. B., Marietta, O.
