Tears Are Shed For Plight
Of Beauty Contest Winners

HOLLYWOOD AP) - As the
aeason (or beauty contests ap
proaches, we are asked to shed
tear for the plight of the poor
winners.
Don't do it! Judging from a
local survey, the contest winners
are doing all right.
It is often claimed that nothing
remains for beauty queens after
their victory except oblivion
True, few of them have set the
world afire as actresses. But they
can still make good livings on the
basis of their prize-winning assets.

themselves on earnings from
movies, TV, modeling and night
clubs.
Do beauty titles help their ac
ting careers?
No, says Miss Oermany. They
are labeled as beauties without
talent.
Yes, says Miss Minnesota
"Beauty contests can he stepping
stones to a career if a girl keeps
her head.
But all agree that beauty must
be accompanied by talent. If a
girl has both, she can have a
chance in Hollywood, the beauties
declared, but they recommended
that she come here with no less
than $500 as a nest egg to tide
her over.
Among the other results of the
survey:
Beauty winners do not rival
Jayne Mansfield in the chest de
partment. The girls averaged 35'j
inches in the bosom.
Most of them don't think the
Hollywood wolves are more viru
lent than those elsewhere. "But
there are more of them here
said Miss Germany.
They must keep strict discipline
to maintain their beauty. Regular
hours, careful diet, exercise
"Skip the desserts and stick to
salads, fruits and steaks," said
Miss Minnesota.

Victor Has Hopes Of Being
Discovered For Third Time

NEW YORK (API-Robert Alda,
who has already been discovered
twice, hopes to be found for a
third time rriday night.
UarK, good-looking Alda who
started in show business as a
night club singer, was discovered
by the movies when he played
George Gershwin in "Rhapsody in
Blue.
"Then." he says sadly, "all
producers wanted me for was to
play piano players.
In an effort to break out of
type. Alda quit Hollywood and
returned to night clubs and vau
deville. He was singing in Detroit
when the producers of the musi
cal "Guys and Dolls" saw him
work and cast him as gambler Sky
Masterson.
"Then Broadway discovered
me. he continues, "and while
Sky was the hero, he was a gam
bler. Gambler and racketeers are
sort of the same. So Broadway
producers started thinking of me
i a heavy.
Friday night Alda appears on a
CBS Playhouse of Stars film show,
"Curfew at Midnight," playing a
parole officer deeply concerned
with the rehabilitation of adult of
fenders under his supervision a
good guy.
"I'm due to be discovered by
television, says Alda half-joking
"Seriously, however, if this one
gets a good reception it might be
a starting point for a series. The
parole officer character is one you
could build a good show around
The forthcoming show is by
no means the first time Alda has
been seen on TV. He has done
innumerable guest shots, and was
the star of a wartime cloak and
dagger 'series made for the
American syndication market in
Holland. There was nothing the
matter with the series that a
stronger 'selling organization
couldn t have remedied but it nev
er really got rolling.
For the past three years Alda
has spent most of his time in Eu
rope.

Seeking Job As Treasurer
SACRAMENTO (AP) Youthful
financial wizard Leonard Ross,
winner of $164,000 on television
quiz shows last year, tries his
hand at winning an election today.
The 12-year-old high school ju

mean a big general crisis is yet

tha Hinrjchsen, a gray-haired lit
tle lady, lives in a doghouse and
likes it.
The doghouse, actually a 17-
room brownstone house in upper
Manhattan, is populated by Mrs.
Hinrichsen and 46 dogs.
By tonight, the canine popula
tion will have dropped to two or
Mrs. Hinrichsen will face another
round in court.
That's what Magistrate Walter
Bayer told her yesterday.
She and the Society for the Pre
vention of Cruelty to Animals
have been squabbling over the
dogs for some time. The society,
acting on numerous complaints
from neighbors, claims she is
keeping all those dogs without
enough food and drink.
Mrs. Hinrichsen told Bayer that
many of her dogs are pedigreed
and that they are a nice, friendly
lot. She said she needs the dogs
for protection.
ASPCA agent Joseph Schlesing
er said there isn't one pedigreed
dog in the lot.
Mrs. Hinrichsen went home to
her beloved menagerie after
promising to comply with Bayer's
order.
Schlesinger wasn't so sure she
would.
"I know her," he said, "she
won't give up a single one of
them. To her, they're like kids."
o come. Nasser cannot afford
such a crisis.
I have just completed a swing
through virtually all the Arab
East. One impression stands out.
Among young intellectuals, from
whom Nasser has drawn much of
his strength, doubt is setting in.
But his biggest concern must be
for the Egyptian economy.
Sooner or later Egypt will need
help to get out of her progressive
ly worsening economic situation.
Nasser and the Russians seem
to be sizing up one another care
fullyneither willing to trust the
other too far. The Soviet treatment
of Yugoslavia, execution of Hun
garian revolution leaders, - had a
noticeable effect among Egypt's
thinking population.
If the Lebanese fighting ends
clear victory for elements he sup
ports, Nasser will have to pursue
the advantage elsewhere or sur
render the momentum gained by
extreme Arab nationalism. Failure
to follow up a victory would dis
illusion Arab extremists who ex
pect him to perform miracles in
their behalf.
However, if the Lebanese affair
ends in palpable Nasser defeat,
it will spell political peril for him
end might require desperate re
sponses. The Lebanese affair has fright
ened other Arab leaders. If the
Lebanese government survives,
supported by Western power, then
fcasser finds his United Arab Re
public truly isolated in the world
of Arabs. If the Beirut regime
fails, more of Nasser's bridges to
the West are burned and he must
push on in spite of himself with
his own brand of liberation.
To Egypt s middle class. Nasser
is no hero. The small Egyptian
middle class in the cities has felt
a progressively tightening pinch
ever since the 1056 Suez crisis.
Impatient young men, thrown
into the businpss of running an
economy without knowledge or ex
perience, have wasted money at
a frightful rate. Millions of pounds
disappeared in well-meaning but
poorly planned and executed lociai
experiments.
Eventually Nasser will need
help to get out of his financial
mess, now complicated by union
with Syria. He shows signs of
being wary of leaning on the Com
munist bloc.
Those who know Nasser well say
that given any period of Middle
East calm, it is highly likely that
he will turn voluntarily to tht
United States for help.

patrolman Mark Croshier de
scribed two kittens he found in a
washing machine where thoy had
been tossed by two small boys.
He rescued the kittens, damp

washer in a garage.
Croshier had one good thing to
