NICOSIA. Cyprus (AP) A 41-year-old
Greek Cypriot was fatal
ly shot while cycling to work to
day through the Turkish sector ol
Limassol.
The man, Panavis Kvriacou.
was the 16th Greek Cypriot killed
since communal battles began
June 7 between Cypnots of Turk
ish and Greek descent. Two Turks
have been killed.
The Greeks are seeking union
with Greece. The Turks want this
east Mediterranean island parti
tioned between the 400,000 Greeks
and 100.000 Turks if the British
relinquish their-colonial rule.
Six gasoline bombs also were
tossed today at a Limassol wine
factory but officials said the only
one which exploded did no dam
age. A curfew was clamped on the
south coast town.
In an overture to ease the strain
between Greece and Turkey
threatening the North Atlantic
Alliance, four Turkish, army offi
cers arrived in Athens unexpect
edly yesterday to attend a NATO
staff conference at the Greek De
fense Ministry.
Reports from Ankara said their
presence indicated Turkey s readi
ress to cooperate with Greece
within NATO despite their feud
over Cyprus. But a Greek govern
ment spokesman said cooperation
wilt not materialize.
Construction Begins On
$250,000 Shasta Ski Bowl
Dl'NSMUIR Construction of the
$250,000 Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl lodge
actually got underway this week
after a two-month delay battling
late snows on the slopes of Mt.
Shasta by road and site clearing
crews.
A 30-man construction crew 'vill
be housed at the timberline site
to expedite completion oi the
lods, William diCristina, lodge
manager, stated. Two 50 by 16
buildings to serve as a bunkhouse
and dining room have been as
sembled for the crews.
Only the lodge site, the upper
parking area and a one way road
has been cleared. The rest of Pan
ther Meadows, which is the site of
the Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl, is still
under 15 to 20 feet of snow.
The remaining six miles of Ever-
itt Memorial Highway being rebuilt
under a Bureau of Public Roads
contract is expected to be com
pleted within 60 days. Pending
completion this upper poryion of
the road is closed to the public to
facilitate the work. Tourists and

Last year the State Legislature
decided that highway should be
named Cabrillo Highway, even
though it is also called Pacific
Highway or Pacific Coast High
way through most of the state.
Cabrillo Highway signs have ap
peared alongside of, or near, Pa
cific Highway signs.
There are at least 20 such dou
ble postings along the route's final
southern stretch in ban Diego
County.
All that Jacob Dckema, state
district highway engineer, can say
about this is: "es, there is
bound to be some confusion."
But Harry C. Haelsig, city plan
ning director, adds more confus
ion to that confusion. He points
out that U.S. Highway 395 through

ed roof serving as an observation
sundeck and will be glass enclosed
for maximum view. It will consist
of a soda fountain, cafeteria
lounge, souvenir shop and rental

The Caledonian Bagpipers were
awarded first place in the band
division and Dunsmuir High School
Band was second.
Best riding unit was the Squaw
Valley Riders with the Gazelle
Horsemen, second.
The Dunsmuir Eagles and the
Dunsmuir Little Leaguers shared
honors lor I he best decorated auto
mobile. Single entries given
awards were a Little Mexican float
and Brownie, the clown.
Additional honors went to the
Castle (rag 4-11 and the Mount
Shasta llich Teens were third.
Frank Castro, parachute jump
er, was given an ovation as he en
tered the ballpark cn foot. Castro
jumped from a plane at noon to
signal the beginning of the grand
parade but was carried west of
the ballpark by a fickle wind.
However, he landed safely against
the canyon wall and after extri
cating his chute from a tree,
joined the crowd.
A barbecue beef dinner was
served at the city park during the
afternoon and square dancing pro
vided entertainment at the Mason
ic Temple.

terday from his post as chairman
of the Western Conference of
Teamsters.
Relinquishing his job to Einar
Mohn, an old rival, in an emo
tion-packed session here, Brew
ster told the 700 delegates he was
stepping down "with the kindest
thoughts a man could have lor his
organization."
He pledged 100 per cent support
to Mohn, appointed by Teamsters
President James Hofla after Hot
fa had removed Brewster by ex
ecutive action. Hoffa acted after
replacing Dave Beck Sr.
Brewsler originally was select
ed by Beck as Western Confer- i
ence chairman.
For Brewster, it was the latest
development in a career that has
been stormy, both inside and out
side the labor movement.
His most publicized episode
came in January 1957 when he re
fused to answer certain questions
before the Senate Permanent In
vestigations subcommittee.
Brewster was convicted of 31
counts of contempt of Congress,
hut the conviction was reversed
three nonths ago by the U.S. Cir
cuit Court of Appeals. The court
upheld Brewster's contention that
the subcommittee lacked jurisdiction.

in the Abruzzi region of southern

The shocks came in two waves,

The Klamath Forest Protective
Association has reported five more
fires, apparently started by light
ning Sunday evening which were
put out Monday. One such fire
was reported in Monday's paper.
The new fires, all of which in
volved only one tree snag, were
put out by KFPA crews with the
exception of one near Weyerhaeus
er Camp Six which was put out
by a crew of the timber com
pany. Three of the fires were
just south of Bly and one was on
Yainax Butte.
