Gonzales, Hood In Finals
FOREST HILLS, N.Y.-.(UPI)
Big Pancho Gonzales, already as
sured of the $3,000 top money,
meets Lew Hoad of Australia to
night in a wind-up of Jack Kra
mer's $15,000 round robin pro ten
nis championship that's a mere
formality.
Of more importance to Pancho's
purse is the doubles final in which
he and Aussie Ken Rosewall hope
to split $1,500 by defeating TYny
Tr.ibert of Cincinnati' and Frank
Sedgman of Australia.
Pancho ran his record to 5-0 in
tingles Monday night by dusting
off Sedgman, 10-8, 6-2, and then
backed into the championship
when Rosewall whipped Hoad, 6-2.
9-7. Rosewall finished the tourna
ment with a 5-1 record but even
if Hoad licks Pancho in the wind-
up to give Gonzales a similar rec
ord Rosewall can't claim a title
tie because he lost to Pancho last
Sunday.

SAN FRANCISCO (UPD Willie
Mays collected his 999th and 1000-
th major league hits Monday
night but that s the best that
can be said about the San Fran
cisco Giants in their contest with
Milwaukee.
The Giants suffered their third
shutout of the season, 7 0. at the
hands of the National League
leaders. As a result, they fell 2
1-2 games off the pace.
They could get out of town
within a half-game of first place
but if thoy do they'll have to
sweep the next two games Irom
the Braves. That's not being done
very handily these days.
Manager Bill Rigney plans to
start Stu .Miller n-3) against the
Braves tonight. The Braves will
go with Warren Spahn B-4i.
The most humiliating part about
the Giants' defeat was the fact
the Braves won behind 27-year-old
Carleton Willey, a strong-armed
right-hander who never before had
slarled in a major league game.
Willey was the most valuable
player with Wichita's American
Association champions last year.
He recently was recalled from
Wichita, where he had a 3-3 rec
ord and a no-hit, no runner.
Willey yielded six hits and got
hii no-runner Monday night on a
fincy bit of defensive work by left
fiekttr Joe Adcock.
