tion or ouster were Richard H.

Chairman William T. Broom
head of Rhode island was equal
ly emphatic that "Adams should
stay." He was Joined in that by
chairmen Clarence F. Baldwin of
Connecticut and Ben C. Henley ot
Arkansas.
Many Democrats held their fire,
obviously waiting until lata in th
campaign. But there was a risinj
chorus of criticism.
By JACK BELL
WASHINGTON (AP) Congres-'
sional Republicans bowed today to
President Eisenhower s decision to
keep Sherman Adams on the job.
But many GOP members made it
plain they aren't happy about it.
Republican state chairmen split
over the question of Eisenhower's
top aide. Some still insisted he
should get out. Others supported
Eisenhower's backing him. Many
declined comment, but could
agree with one of their number,
Ray Bliss of Ohio, who said "I'm
certain I'd rather it hadn't hap
pened." In New York, Democratic Na
tional Chairman Paul Jt. Butler
left no doubt the Democrats will
make a major political issue out
of Adams' dealings with indus
trialist Bernard Goldfine of Bos
ton. As to Eisenhower's insistence
on keeping Adams as his chief as
sistant, Butler added:
"The President's own conduct
makes him as morally responsible
for this improper conduct as Mr.
Adams is himself."
Adams has testified he accepted
gifts and favors from Goldfine, a
family friend, and also contacted
two federal agencies studying
complaints against Goldfine's
companies. But he said there was
no connection and he had no in
tent to win favored treatment for
Goldfine.
Eisenhower agreed with
Adams' concession that he could
have "acted a little more prudent
ly, but said he admired and res
pected his chief aide for ability
and integrity.
"I need him," Eisenhower
added.
The consensus among the poli
ticians here appeared to be that
Eisenhower hadn't changed the
situation much except for one
aspect:
The President made it impos
sible for Republican candidates
for the House and Senate to dis
avow Adams and still ride the
eoattails of a president most of
them would like lo praise in cam
paign speeches.
Perhaps significantly, almost
the only members of Congress vol
unteering a good word for Eisen
hower s decision to keep Adams
at his desk were those not up for
reelection this year.
Sen. Homer E. Capehart
R-lnd, who isn't running this
year, said Eisenhower has all the
facts on Adams "and I'm going
along with the president."
Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois.
the assistant Republican leader.
said in a separate interview that
it was "the President's determi
nation to make." Dirksen is not
campaigning this year.

Oral Hearings Set July 16
For Extended Klamath Air
Service; Tucker To Appear
The date for a Washington,!
D.C., oral hearing on extended
airline service for Klamath Falls
has been set definitely for July 16.
On that day, the Civil Aero
nautics Board will hear argu-j
ments principally concerned with
establishing scheduled air line
service between here and Reno.
Commerce Chamber Manager
R. Frank Tucker will make the
trip to Washington and present
arguments for this service on be
half of all groups interested in
the Klamath area.
It is believed locally the CAB
is likely to go along with a rccorn
mendation by one of its exami
ners that service be added from
here to Boise, Idaho, and from
here to Salem.
However, the examiner did not
recommend the Reno flights and
the chamber of commerce filed an
"exception" to the CAB, urging
allowance of this service and sup
plying reasons why.
Tucker this week was stilt gath
ering all available information to
support addition of the Reno serv
ice.
If the examiner's recommenda
tions are adopted by the- full
aeronautics board, it would mean
that United Air Lines would sus
pend its San Francisco - Sacramento-Klamath
Falls - Bend-Port
land run, as it has long sought to
do.
West Coast Airlines, which cur
rently flies from here to Portland
via Medford and other western
Oregon points, would take over
United's schedule.
This line would also lake over
the new stops at Salem and Boise,
the latter via Lakeview and Burns.
It, too, would assume the Reno
service, if the five-man CAB gives
its consent.
Among Tucker's arguments for
the Reno addition will be these:
Buses are the only public trans
portation available presently from
here to Reno; the Air Force will
need commercial air service be
tween here and Reno's nearby
Stead base when the new Kingsley
jet base begins operating; hlam
ath Falls and Reno both have
many important industrial instal
lations which require air trans
portation by personnel back and
forth; and that the Klamath Falls
Reno flight leg should be added
to attain an efficient and realistic
airline pattern.
Many tourists would come here
from Reno if airline service were
available, it is believed locally.
