LEXINGTON. Va. (AP)-Jt 21-year-old
honors student from
Washington, D. C, mounts the
f latform at Washington and Lee
Iniversity today to deliver the
valedictory.
For John Monk Larson it will be
more than just the final bright
touch on an outstanding college
career.-It will also be the high
point in a 13-ycar battle against
polio. -
And, says Larson, had it not
been for his handicap, ho might
not have done so well in college.
Outside interests would have en
croached on the time he devoted
to studies, he says. '
Larson was stricken in 194S. He
lost the use of both arms but had
some control of his right hand.
His afflicallon did not stop him
from graduating from St. Albans
hchool in Washington with honors.
At W&L, as a political science ma
jor, he received only one "B" in
an otherwise all "A" report. Ho
was elected to Phi Beta Kappa
scholastic fraternity in his junior
year.
Only one concession was al
lowed him by his professors. Since
he could write only with difficulty,
he was given additional time
while taking quizzes and in hand
ing In reports

Demos Appear Certain Of
Gaining Senate Control;
Assembly Sweep Possible

appeared certain today to
gain control of the State Senate
in tnc November balloting.

establish a majority in the Assem
bly, it was indicated by virtually
complete returns trom Tuesday
primary election.
If the Democrats win control of
Dom houses in Sacramento it
would be the first time in 70
years.

Twelve Democrats still have two
years to serve. Six won both party
nominations Tuesday. Two other
incumbents, Richard Richards of
Los Angeles and Charles Brown
of Shoshone, won Democratic re-
nomination and rolled up an im
pressive Republican vote.
Richards lacked only 274 votes
of deadlocking Republican Brad
ford Trenham who polled 170,920
Dauois on the GOP side.

Downey's most cherished posses
sion was Ihe American flae which
draped her husband's casket dur
ing his military funeral.
Bill Downey had been a veteran
of the Spanish-American War. The
flag from his casket had been her
linn to mm.
But after she reached 85. Mrs
Downey decided the colors should
be an inspiration to American
youth. Tyrcll Junior High School,
across San Francisco Bay in Hay-
ward, advised her it would be
proud to have Bill's flag.
She presented them to little
Bobby Hale before the student
body with these words: "My hus
band was a solider. He was not a
nero. But he was a good soldier.
And mat is what counts. To be a
good solider ... to love America
. . and this flae. . . ."
She wiped tears from her eves
and handed the flag to Bobby.
Then the wide-eyed youngsters
saw her collapse. It was not until
later that they learned that Mrs
Downey died in a San Francis
hospital of a heart attack.
