California Demos Predict November Landslide
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) What
happened in California's primary
election Tuesday? Why the- big
Democratic splash.?
Probably no one reason can ex
plain. A number of factors appear
to fit into the complex pattern of
California politics that background
the election figures.
Something similar happened in
'.954. It didn't create the sanw
stir, however, because a national
tigure like Sen. William F. Know-
land wasn't involved. And the
Democratic margin wrisn't as
ireat.
Four years ago. the California
ballot began to identify candidates
as either "Dem." or "Rep." for
the first time. Democrats who
outregistered the Republicans 3-2
harnessed their big vote and
nominated a full slate for state
officers.

USCG Halts Golden Rule
HONOLULU I API - Coast
Guardsmen stopped pacifists from
sailing the ketch Golden Rule to
ward the Atomic Energy Commis
sion's test area again yesterday
this time on the high seas.
Albert Smith Bigelow, Cos Cob,
Conn., .the Golden Rule's skipper,
. was arrested before the ' ketch
sailed on a charge that he con
' spired to violate a federal court
injunction against the sailing.
JVilliam Huntington, St. James,
Long Island, N.Y., returned to
Honolulu, providing a navigator
just in time to get the 30-foot ves
sel under way.-
George Willoughby, Blackwood
Terrace, N.J., ene of the crew,
said the ketch was well outside
the three-mite territorial limit
when the Coast Guard caught up.
Huntington was arrested on the
return to Honolulu.
Because of the doctrine of hot
pursuit, it made no difference
that the ketch was nabbed out
side the limit of United States
jurisdiction, said Asst. U.S. Atty.
Edgar D. Crumpacker. The doc
trine holds that a criminal can
be pursued across a border and
that his capture in such cases is
legal.
A previous attempt to sail was
made May 1. That resulted in
Judge Jon Wiig finding the crew
guilty of violating his injunction
against? the trip. He gave them
suspended sentences and put them
un pronation lor a year mat time.
Other crewmen are Orion Sher
wood, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and
James Peck, New York City.
Bigelow, Huntington and Willough
by are Quakers. Sherwood is a
Methodist. Peck says he is a non
religious pacifist.
TALLEST MOSAIC
SPRINGFIELD. Mass. (UP) I
The world's tallest mosaic has been
created by Thurston Munson for the
Church of the Holy Cross at South
Portland, Maine. It is seven feet
wide and 94 feet tall, and con
tains more than 235,000 pieces of
Venetian glass. It depicts the life
of Christ from the nativity to the
resurrection.
But fn November, Californians
returned to their old independent
voting ways. They ignored party
lines. Every Democrat running for
statewide office was defeated
except one. That was Atty. Gen.
Edmund G. Brown.
Republicans think they can win
again next November. But Dem
ocratic party leaders are openly
talking about a landslide. They
teel the voters are ready for a
change.
There's no doubt the primary
showed a definite party resur
gence in California. One test is
the huge vote rolled up by Brown
leading his ticket as the Demo
cratic candidate for governor.
Republicans pointed out that
Knowland devoted only 14 days in
the state to his primary cam-
paign. That was all he needed for
the Republican gubernatorial nom
ination. It's true. Rut Brown. wAo
barnstormed for weeks, walked on
with the high popular vote by
.more than 500.000.
Gov. Goodwin Knight cam
paigned strenuously in his Repub
lican race for the U.S. Senate. But
Knowland outdrew him. More im-i
portant, so did the Democratic
nominee, Rep. Clair Engle of Red
Bluff.
Just about everyone cross-filed
m hopes of winning both nomina
tions. Nobody did except a hand
ful of state legislators and con
gressmen, and nearly all of these
were Democrats.
Knowland's split with Knight
apparently didn't hurt him on the
Republican ticket. He lost voles
among Democrats and independ
ents without whose support no
Republican can win in California.
The Republican senator undoubt
edly lost the labor vote which
helped former Gov. Earl Warren
and Knight to overcome the han
dicap of the top-heavy Democrat
ic registration. Knowland's call
lor a "union democracy" pro-,
gram, including legislation to out
law the union shop, brought all
out opposition by union leaders.
Tnt In irojin th nWlirA mm
plicated, remember that Knight
was actively supported Dy Cali
fornia AFL leaders and shared
the AFL's Senate endorsement
with Engle. Knight's vote suggests
ine rank-ana-iue may nave vuieu
ior Engle.
