THE OLD STRAW SKIMMER
COMES 'SAILING BACK
NEW YOI!K (NEA)-H's straw
hat time again. And the big news
among the raffia set is the sur
prising revival of the straw skim
mer, or sailor. This is the flat
straw without which Maurice Che-
alier would look like just another
Frenchman.
The rebirth of the skimmer is
surprising because it comes in an
era when, otherwise, men are go
ing for more comfortable hats
(crushable, lightweight, cooler
weaves) and nobody ever said the
skimmer was a gem of comfort.
Two possible reasons for the re
vival, first is the usual cyclical
trends in fashion what goes out
must come back, sometime. bcc
ond is the fact that the skimmer
fits in well with certain other as
pects of fashion both with the che
mise the women are reluctantly
donning and with the Ivy Look
in men's clothes.
There are some differences be
tween the skimmers of the '20s and
the new '5S models. Dobbs' pet
new skimmer, the Fore-and-Aft,
has a bit of a taper to the brim.

Thomas Becg's skimmer has an
extremely narrow brim inch
es and colorful, interchangeable
bands. The skimmers of the old
days were usually banded in black
and the brim was wide enough to
land airplanes.
Men are seemingly finding the
usual straw a touch too informal
for some occasions, and there's an
air of dressiness to the skimmer
that somehow appeals to them
In the last two years, there have
been slightly more skimmer sales
and the advance orders for this
season are relatively large.
There are still plenty of the rcgu
lar straws, of course, in all kinds
of shapes, styles and colors. Chief
advance in this field is Adam's
Duke, wljich has a madras band
and a matching undcrbrim. This
give's a colorful new effect that
is definitely pleasing.
But this is mainly, from a
news standpoint, the year of the
skimmer.
News from California, where fa
shions are always somewhat de
tached from the rest of the coun
try, is that at least one designer
has come out definitely and said
"The Ivy Look is, dying,
The one with that flat statement
Ron Postal, who designs for
stars like Vic Damone, Frankie
Laine and Rusty Draper.
"The ultra-conservative 'naturaf
look was too natural for the male
figure," says Postal. "So many
Ivy-Look-drossed bandits' have
been arrested that the style has be
come identified with delinquency,
like the loot suit of 10 years ago."
Postal says the Ivy Look tends
to make men look like they have
narrow shoulders, skinny legs and
hay windows. He says that most
new California models have gone
back to wide shoulders and esti
mates that, by 1960. the Ivy Look
will be a thing of the past.
Maybe so, but the chances are
more likely that, through the bulk
of the country, Influences of the
Ivy Look period will last for at
least a decade. The very-extremn
Ivy Look may completely die, but
the more moderate styles will
probably linger for years, and
the chances of any return to the
landingstrip shoulders that Califor
nia promoted in the '40s are remote.
Styles change. That's what makes
them styles.
